Janet M. Rice, 78

Janet M. Rice, 78, of Strasburg, died Tuesday, April 24, 2012, at Arbor View in Willow Valley. Born in Strasburg, she was the daughter of the late Walter F. and Miriam Barley Book. Her husband of 53 years Franklin J. “Pete” Rice died in 2009.

A graduate of the former Lampeter High School, Janet worked on the private car “Paradise” located at the Strasburg Railroad and as a crossing guard for Lampeter-Strasburg School District. She was a member Wesley United Methodist Church, Strasburg, and the former ladies auxiliary of Paul R. Strubel VFW Post #8710. Janet enjoyed L-S High School sports, Penn State football, reading, vacationing in Wildwood Crest and going out to eat. She had served as a Girl Scout leader and as president of the L-S Band Booster Club. A real animal lover, she was especially fond of her grand-dogs and grand-kitties.

Janet is survived by three children, Kay Graybill, Carol A. Rice and James, husband of Pam Shaub Rice, all of Strasburg; four granddaughters, Amanda E. Graybill, Lindsey A. Graybill, Laura A. Sending my sympathy to the family.  Janet was my best friend when I was growing up and she was a new mother. We had many great times together.  She was a very kind and caring person.

In Sympathy,
Doris McComsey Mankin

Your mother was a great lady! She will be missed. I have many happy memories of my early years in Strasburg & how welcoming your whole family was to us.
We have lots of "history" together, esp. through Woman’s Club, Strasburg Elementary & the pool. Those were the good old days!
Rick & I extend our sympathy to all of you.

My heartfelt sympathies to the Rice and Graybill families at this sad time. I have many fond memories of Janet and she always made me laugh when we were together. She was never one to be shy about speaking her mind and that was one of the things I admired most about her.  She loved her family more than anything and just beamed when telling me the latest family news.  I am sure she felt very blessed to have all of you in her life especially these last few months when she needed you the most and you were all there for her.  May she rest in peace.
With sympathy,
Marcia Doman

To the Rice family,

My sympathies to all of the family as I was saddened to read of Janet’s passing. I have fond memories of conversations your parents and I have had over the years at the laundramat, of all places! I got to know them quite well. Janet had always asked first, how are you doing, then she would talk about accomplishments of her children and grandchildren. When I was in LPN nursing school, she had encouraged me to continue someday to go to RN school just like her daughter ( Carol ? )saying she worked at Willow valley and was very proud of her. I don’t know your family by name / face, but it was nice that your parents spoke of all of you. I had helped your parents with carrying their laundry basket to/from the car. They loved that last car! Your father helped your mother as much as he could, but mostly sat with me as your mother did most of the folding! Just doing the weekly task made it go faster for all of us, by simply conversing.

Another thing that stood out about your parents is that they always asked about my son, and was pleased that he graduated from college having received a bachelors and masters degree. You see, he delivered newspapers to your parents for six years back in the late 90’s /early 2000’s. They were very nice to my son at Christmas time each year have mailed him a bonus. That was back in the days when a customer could pick up a newspaper on the porch, not the sidewalk ! Your Mother really appreciated fine service and now I can believe it had something to do with being a Girl Scout!

May you find comfort in Our Lord and those who surround you.

Amy High,
Strasburg
