Edward “Dean” Hockenberry, 84

Edward “Dean” Hockenberry, 84, of St. Paul, Kansas (formerly from Lancaster, PA) passed away unexpectedly after a brief illness, September 5, 2014.

Edward was born in Blairsville, PA and joined the United States Air Force after high school. He served his country for 20 years, stationed domestically and in Europe, attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant.

In 1970, he retired from the U.S. Air Force and located to Lancaster, PA where he found employment as the Office Manager at ETEMCO, a small electronics firm. In 1980, he became co-owner of ETEMCO and assumed the position of Secretary-Treasurer. During his tenure as co-owner he created CALLCARE, a catalog sales company that services the nursing home and hospital industry.

Edward retired for a second time in 1989 and moved to Erie, KS where he married Mija Culver.

His interests included woodworking, travelling, cooking, and following Penn State football, even over to Dublin, Ireland the week preceding his death.

He was preceded in death by his parents Savannah and Sylvester Hockenberry, his sister Olive Louise Abel, and his brother Ronald Hockenberry. He is survived by his wife Mija Hockenberry, his sister Doris Locati, his daughter Teresa Webster, his son Edward Hockenberry, husband of Lori J., and grandchildren Katherine and Thomas Hockenberry. He will be greatly missed by Mija’s children Sonya Culver, Miriam Carter, Rosie Culver, and Richard Culver.

A visitation from 10am to 11am and funeral service at 11am will be held on Saturday, September 13th, 2014 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 540 West Walnut Street, Lancaster, PA. Interment will immediately follow the service and will be for family members only. A memorial service for Edward was held in St. Paul, KS on Monday September 8th at the Prairie Mission Retirement Village. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Edward’s name to Fisher House (www.fisherhouse.org or 888-294-8560) or Parsons, KS children’s museum, Curious Minds Discovery Zone, (1810 Main Street, Parsons, KS 67357, 620-778-2657).
