Dorothy J. Cox

May 23, 2015

Dorothy J. Cox died Saturday evening at Moravian Manor in Lititz. Born in Hammond, Indiana, Dottie was the daughter of the late Irene and Thomas Akin Keir. She lived in Indiana and Michigan before moving with her family in 1966 to Manheim Township, where she lived until she moved to Moravian Manor.

Dottie was a homemaker, mom and wife to the late Frederick L. Cox, who died in 1993. The two had a long, happy marriage, enjoying traveling, dancing and, most of all, each other and their family.

When she moved to Lancaster, Dottie busied herself with community and volunteer work. She was a 42-year volunteer for the Lancaster Meals on Wheels, as well as a member and former president of the Lancaster Women’s Club. She made friends wherever she went, and enjoyed playing bridge as a member of several groups. She also was an active member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School, served on the Altar Guild, was a member of the Musical Arts Committee, and often one of the first people to greet a visitor in the pews.

In her later years, Dottie’s favorite and most important job was being a grandma. She treated her grandchildren to the best scrambled eggs, macaroni and cheese with hot dogs, and baked chicken dinners in the world. She took them on trips, taught them to play the piano, played kickball with them (acting as the all-time pitcher), set up a teepee for them on her back porch, and spoiled them with “candy time” and sleepovers.

Dottie is survived by two daughters, Nancy Pokopec, of Manheim Township, and Cindy Stauffer, wife of Tom, of Lititz. Her “grands” are Jennifer Pokopec, of Harrisburg; and Kate, Ben and Alli Stauffer, all of Lititz. She also is survived by a brother, Tom Keir, husband of Linda, of Knoxville, Tennessee, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, David, and a sister, Betty.

She also leaves behind an extended family at Moravian Manor, where the staff enjoyed her hugs and “thumbs up” for all of the tender care they gave her.

Friends will be received on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 from 6-8PM at the Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA. A visitation will also be held on Thursday, May 28, 2015 at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Rd., Lancaster, PA 17601 from 9:30-10:30AM, with the Funeral Service to follow at 10:30AM. Interment in St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in Dottie’s memory to St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church at the above address or to Lancaster Meals On Wheels, 1085 Manheim Pike, Lancaster, PA 17601.

Condolences to the Family

May 28, 2015

Dear Cindy and Nancy,  Our sincere sympathy to  you on the death of your mother. Although we had not seen her in some years we remember her as a good friend. We have fond memories of both your mother and father. We will pass along the news to Mary. We do not have your current address, thus the email.

Condolences to the Cox family.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to your whole family.  Psalms 147:3 says Jehovah God, “heals the broken hearted, and binds up their wounds.”  May God bring you comfort and peace.

Dear Nancy, Cindy and your Families,
I am so sorry to hear about the loss of you Mother and GrandMother. I know how tough it can be. Hopefully it will give our Mom’s a chance to get back together, play cards and re-live old times along side our Dad’s.
Sorry we can’t be ther in person to share our condolences, but please know that we will be thinking of you and wishing you the best.
Your friends,
John, Jeff and James Scolastico

Dear Cindy and Nancy, I am reading this in Germany while on the orchestra tour.  I wanted you to know how sad I am in your mother’s passing.  She had become so frail, but still delightfully feisty.  She was a unique character and a lady to be cherished.   Donna Burkholder.
