February 07, 2016

Alma L. (Herre) Brockhouse, 96, of Elizabethtown, died Monday, February 7, 2016 at Masonic Village.
Born in Harrisburg on February 3, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Ludwig G. and Alma (Hamaker) Herre. She grew up in Harrisburg and graduated from William Penn High School. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1942 from MacMurray College for Women in Jacksonville, Illinois. While in Jacksonville, she met her future husband, Frederick W. Brockhouse. They were married in Port Angeles, Washington on July 10, 1943 and were married for more than 68 years before he preceded her in death on February 18, 2012.
After graduation from college, she taught high school for two years, then returned home to Harrisburg when her husband Frederick deployed to England during WWII. While in Harrisburg, she worked at the state capitol in the Revenue Department until shortly after the war ended.
Following the war, her husband remained in the United States for a career. During this time, spanning more than 20 years, she and her husband lived in many places, including Panama City, FL; Champaign, IL; Biloxi, MS; Tachikawa AFB, Japan; Bangor, ME; and Syracuse, NY. Her favorites from among these were the 4 years spent in Champaign with the ROTC program at the University of Illinois and 2 ½ years in Japan. While in Japan, she was active in family services, the officers’ wives club, serving as a Cub Scout leader, and teaching Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, and other religious groups.
In addition to her late husband Frederick, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mary (Herre) Lloyd of Harrisburg, Mary’s husband William Arthur Lloyd, and a brother, Roger, of Scranton.
She is survived by 2 sons, Steven Ludwig of Springfield, VA and Ronald Frederick of Virginia Beach; a nephew, William Lloyd and his wife Susanne of Elizabethtown; 2 great-nieces, Denise Brill and her husband John of Elizabethtown and Lisa (Lloyd) Costello and her husband Robert of Manheim; and a great nephew, Jeffrey Lloyd and his wife Gia of Sonoma, CA.

Condolences to the Family

February 18, 2016

We are neighbors of Ronald Brockhouse in Virginia Beach.  We were fortunate to have met Mr. & Mrs. Brockkhouse and talked with them many times.  Each year since we have known them, we have received a Christmas card from Mrs. Brockhouse with a personal note to us.  We share the sorrow of the family, but we also share the hope of a reunion where there will be no more pain, no more sorrow, no more death, and God Himself will wipe away our tears.  May God give you comfort.
C. L. and Audrey Lawrence
