Zane Earl Kauffman, 90
November 11, 2014
Zane Earl Kauffman, 90, of Lancaster, PA passed away on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at Lancashire Hall after a brief illness resulting from an injury sustained while at home. Born on February 10, 1924 in Osterburg, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Bruce and Sylvia Moorhead Kauffman.
He was a 1941 graduate of Bedford High School.
Zane served his country honorably in the Second World War in the 39th Field Artillery Battalion of the 3rd Infantry division, achieving the rank of corporal before the close of the war. He worked as a cattleman through various firms at the Lancaster Stockyards, one of which he was a partner with his late brother-in-law William McCoy and nephew Richard McCoy. He was a well-known and respected personality around the Stockyards from the early 1950s until its eventual close in 2008. Among his fellow cattlemen he was often referred to as “the lone gentleman” employed by the Union Stockyards. Mr. Kauffman was a member of the First Reformed Church of Lancaster, PA.
An avid hunter, animal lover and fan of westerns as well as a NASCAR enthusiast, Zane also-in his limited spare time- enjoyed poker playing, coin collecting and had a deep fondness for traditional American music.
Most importantly, he was a devoted husband, brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He is survived by his wife Joan Denlinger Kauffman, 81, and son David Earl Kauffman, 61, of Lancaster and a sister, Grace Kauffman McCoy, 101, of Denver, PA. Grandchildren: Tyler Kauffman, 35 and Hunter Kauffman, 30, husband of Alyena Kauffman, and great-grandchildren: Tatiana, Dominic, Patrick and Vincent Kauffman, and James Gamble all of Lancaster, PA. He was preceded in death by his father Bruce in 1958 and mother Sylvia in 1986 and brother, Robert in 1938.
