William Walsh Carroll, 75
William Walsh Carroll, 75, of 1520 Harrisburg Pike, formerly of 113 E. Cottage Ave., Millersville, died peacefully on Tuesday. He was the husband of the late Mary Ellen Troutman Carroll, who passed away in 2000. They had been married for 47 years.
He was a former sports editor and columnist for the Lancaster New Era, where he covered Phillies and Orioles baseball, Penn State football, local high school and college wrestling, and various other sports. He retired in 1996 after 42 years in the newspaper business. He was a member of the Baseball Writers Association of America. He was honored by the District III Wrestling Coaches Association as a member of the District III Wrestling Hall of Fame.
A Philadelphia native, he was the son of the late Harry B. and Mary Walsh Carroll. He was a 1953 graduate of Penn State University, where he majored in journalism. He served in the U.S. Army.
He was of the Roman Catholic faith.
He is survived by five children: Virginia E., of Willow Street; Susan J., of Morton; William W., Jr., of Hughesville; Molly C., wife of Kyle Chappell, of Landenberg; and Cassie C., wife of James Lorah, of Mt. Penn. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Jack and Pete Chappell, and Danny and Natalie Lorah. Also surviving is a cousin, Joseph Walsh, of Margate, NJ.
Funeral services will be held at Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church, 558 W. Walnut St., Lancaster, PA, on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. A viewing will be held at the church from 10-11AM. Interment in St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery.
