William R. Carl, 79, passed away March 4, 2018 at Lebanon VA Medical Center. He was born September 4, 1938 in Lancaster, the son of the late Russel and Elsie (Gable) Carl.
Bill was a Lancaster City Firefighter for 12 years, before health issues forced him off the job, Bill was also a LPN and had taught CPR courses to other firefighters while on the department. He worked another 20 years for the Lancaster Water Department, before retirement. After he retired he played in the sun in Costa Rica for six years, before Lancaster called him home for his final years. He was a United States Army Veteran serving in the 82nd Airborne Division from 1955 to 1958. He was an active member of the Lancaster Kennel Club, serving on work details at every dog show he attended, especially showing his beloved Newfoundland’s, under the Belair Newfs logo. He was also a member of the Newfoundland Club of America, traveling the East Coast, New England, and Ohio areas to show and breed their dogs. His other hobbies included needlepoint, latch hook, and macramé.
A loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, he loved his animals such as the Newfoundland’s that he and his wife raised and showed, along with all the cats who passed through his life. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Catherine A. (Grim) Carl, four children; Terry L. Smith, Lancaster, Jerry L. Carl, Harrisburg, Mary Louise Gonzales, Santa Fe, NM, Michael Trimmer, Oakland, CA, 17 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by four sisters; Betty Kuhns, Doris Stoy, Rose Tangert, and Linda Carl.
Memorial Graveside service will be held 10:00 AM, Friday, March 9, 2018 at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, with Military Honors.
A heartfelt thank you to all the loving nurses and doctors at the Lebanon VA. In lieu of flowers, please bless Bill’s memory with a donation to either one of the wonderful places that helped us through our time of need: Lebanon VA Hospice Unit, 1700 S. Lincoln Ave, Lebanon, PA, 17042 or Compassionate Care Hospice, 1513 Cedar Cliff Drive, Camp Hill, PA 17011.
He will be missed as much as he was loved. In a galaxy far far way, may his soul rest in eternal peace.

Cathy and Family:
I extend my sympathy to you at the loss of Bill. I came on the job after he went to the Water Dept, but I got to know him well on all his station visits and the retirement parties. I hope your memories help you in the times ahead. Take care.
