Condolences to the Family

Bill was a great friend, employee, and colleague of mine from Conrail. After I left Conrail in 1990 Bill and I remained in touch for over 30 years, talking railroad history, politics, and current events. I am so sorry to just now be hearing of his death. Whenever I had business in Philadelphia, if I had time I would come out and visit Bill. His integrity, sense of humor and total dedication to his family was always so impressive. I am going to miss his friendship greatly. If we had not spoken in five years, we could always pick up where we left off as if we had spoken the day before.

Forgive my late condolences, but I have been traveling in remote locations and only recently received the news. Bill was a great teacher and ally throughout my time working with him, and a kind and generous friend in the many years since. Add though he loved the railroad, as his photos clearly show, there was no mistaking that his heart belonged to Pat and the kids. The world is a little less rich now. Judith Weiss

On behalf of the members of Philadelphia Chapter, National Railway Historical Society, we extend our deepest sympathy on Bill’s passing from this life. He was well-known and respected by many Philadelphia Chapter members who would encounter him “trackside” over the years. R. L. Eastwood, Jr., President, Philadelphia Chapter, NRHS.

I met Bill around 1984 when he was Sales Manager in Lancaster and ever since we had stayed in touch, if nothing else with an exchange of Holiday Cards. Bill was very good about staying in touch-a Friend for Life!
In the last several years I had not heard from him and tried to find him as he gave me a bunch of negatives and slides that seem to be collected from his military railway service colleagues and I wanted to get more background on who the photographers were as they range from German experimental steam locomotives that wound up in Fort Eustis (1948) to tramways in Japan & South Korea (1951).
To the extent that I was not successful, this reminds me that perfection stands in the way of done and I will make sure that the photos find their way to the right destination, probably the Barriger Library or Center for Railway Photography and Art, in honor of Bill’s military & railway service
The above being said, if anybody who knew Bill knew some of his railway military railway service colleagues (among them a Mr. Beaver) I would appreciate being in touch.
Remembering Bill fondly in Pittsburgh,
Henry Posner III

Bill and I were Conrail sales colleagues and Bill capably served as my Tulsa Sales Manager/AE. Dedicated and railroad knowledgeable, I often relied on Bill’s expertise. May he rest in eternal peace.
