William (Bill) J. Smythe, Sr., 98

William (Bill) J. Smythe, Sr., 98, formerly of Warren, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 20, 2025, at Willow Valley Communities in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, surrounded by family.

Born in Summit, New Jersey, he was the son of the late Victor D. and Annunciata (Kearns) Smythe and a brother to the late John D. Smythe of Convent Station and David L. Smythe of Stuart, Florida. Bill was a man whose kindness and generosity left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him. Bill, one of the proud founders of Smythe Volvo in Summit, NJ, a dealership he ran with unwavering dedication and remarkable skill for over 50 years. His sharp business acumen and strong sense of integrity earned him the respect of his colleagues, employees, and customers alike.

A proud Navy veteran, Bill enlisted in 1944 during World War II as a cook stationed in Bermuda and was honorably discharged in 1945. His service was a testament to his commitment to duty and his country.

Above all, Bill was a devoted family man. He was married to the late Gail A. (Morgan) Smythe for 58 years before she passed away in 2017. He was predeceased by his infant daughter, Penny He was survived by his loving son, William (Bill) Smythe, Jr. (Holly), his daughters, Andrea Peleg (Yariv), Abbie Ellis (Bob), Alison Smythe and grandchildren, Arielle (Yosef), Jeremy, Katie, Lexi, Rachel, Ben, Maggie, Leah(Erick), Jack and Emily, and great grandchildren, Elai and Talia, all of whom were fortunate to experience his warmth, humor, and boundless love. He had a talent for telling jokes, even if sometimes he would forget the punchline, much to the delight of those around him. His grandkids loved his card tricks, which never failed to spark joy and laughter at family gatherings.

A man of great character and spirit, Bill will be remembered for his incredible generosity, his quick wit, and the way he made those around him feel special. His legacy lives on in the memories of all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A private service will be held for immediate family in New Jersey where he will be laid to rest with his beloved wife, Gail, and infant daughter, Penny. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made in Bill’s name to The Midland School Foundation, Branchburg, New Jersey (midlandnj.org) in his honor.
