Victor E. Alvarez, M.D., 81

Victor E. Alvarez M.D., 81, entered into rest on Saturday, December 1, 2007 at his home after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He had been under the care of Hospice of Lancaster County.

Dr. Alvarez was the adored husband of Carmella Alvarez, with whom he celebrated 50 years of marriage this past June. He will be lovingly remembered by his children: Dr. Victor E. Alvarez (Christine) of Rochester, NY; Maria Lozzi (John) of Lancaster, PA; and Robert Alvarez (Maribel) of Gainesville, VA and his seven beloved grandchildren.

Born in Lima, Peru, he was the son of the late Julio and Maria Ipenza Alvarez. He received his doctor of medicine degree in 1957 from San Marcos University, followed by internships and residency at Emory University’s Crawford Long Memorial Hospital in Atlanta GA, T.C. Thompson Children’s Hospital in Chattanooga, TN, and St. Mary’s Hospital, in Rochester, NY. Dr. Alvarez was a Clinical Instructor in Pediatrics in the School of Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center. He practiced pediatrics in Rochester, NY until his retirement. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Medical Society and the American Medical Association. He was well loved and respected by his patients and colleagues for his passion for his work, generosity, limitless energy and sense of humor. He and his wife belong to St. John Neumann Catholic Church.

He and his wife enjoyed traveling, with memorable trips to Europe, South America, and Africa. Upon retirement, they moved to Spain where they lived many years prior to relocating to Lancaster. Dr. Alvarez adored the ocean and was an avid deep-sea fisherman and enjoyed beach vacations with his family. Above all, Dr. Alvarez was a man who truly loved life and the people who shared it with him.

A private memorial service will be held in Rochester, New York.
