Verna V. (Schmeck) Shumate, 83

September 13, 2024

Verna V. (Schmeck) Shumate, 83 of Columbia, PA and formerly of Brunnerville, passed away at her home on Friday, September 13, 2024 surrounded by her family.

Born in Reinholds and growing up in Mohns Hill, Berks County, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Gladys (Stoud) Schmeck. Verna worked many years as a caring aide at the United Zion Retirement Community. She retired from the Fairfield Inn at the age of 62.

She was a member of Mohn’s Hill Evangelical Congregational Church since she was a child. Verna’s greatest love was spending time with her family. Sunday dinners required no invitation, just an appetite. Verna’s sewing skills were exceptional. Creating and doing crafts were a true passion. An avid reader, there was always a book within reach. She enjoyed bird watching, especially at Middle Creek. Her love of animals and nature was evident. With great joy she cared for her plants and gardens.

Giving her faith feet she was a member of the Loyal Christian Benefits Association. Her ladies group was a source of fellowship with a common purpose, caring for the community. The organized events by the LCBA raised funds for countless organizations, shelters, food hubs and the like. Verna’s chicken corn soup was highly requested at many events.

Verna is survived by her children: Brian Firestine of Arnoldsburg WV, Brad Firestine of Landisville, Francine Firestine-Harley of Lancaster and Christine Dick of Columbia; her 3 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren and her brother Wayne Schmeck of Ephrata. She was preceded in death by her son in law Michael Dick, her daughter in law Cheryl Firestine, and her siblings: Bruce and Barry Schmeck and Etta Mae Sheaffer.

Friends will be received on Saturday, September 21, 2024 from 2-3pm at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA with the memorial Service to follow at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in Verna’s memory to the LCBA, Box 13005, Erie, PA 16514 or to the Pet Pantry of Lancaster County, 26 Millersville Rd. Lancaster, PA 17603.

I worked with Verna at the Fairfield Inn. I kept in touch with her for many years later. I lost touch with her a few years ago.She was so crafty! I learned so much from Verna. I will never forget her. Be safe in the Lord’s arms,Verna.

I did not know Verna, but her daughter Francine spoke of her many times through out our engagements. I always asked how “mom” was doing and she’d tell me of her adventures. She will truly be missed by many but especially her children. They loved her so very much and their holiday meals together were exceptional. I could hardly wait to hear about those special times that this family shared around meals. May the lord hold each and every one close at this time of sadness and may the tradition of family meals together continue.

How do we say goodbye to someone we love and showed love so earnestly. We cling to the promise that one day we shall meet again on those beautiful shores, No pain, sorrow or tears. You will be missed greatly, the memories I will hold dear. Even though you were not my mom, you allowed me to be a part of your life and call you momma. I am forever grateful for your love.  Sandy

We lost a very sweet caring loving soul and Heaven gained a super special soul. We are saddened but not distraught. For we know she is with Jesus and all who went before her. Glorifying the Father. Her spirited life will be remembered by many. She touched the lives of so many people with her kindness and cheerfulness. She was like a second mom to me. And I’m sure my sisters would think the same. Her family meant the world to her. You always felt so welcome when you would visit her. I loved all the times we would go away together to reuzit stores or the Project. Or really anywhere. She was always up for an adventure. I can only imagine what all of them are doing right now in Heaven. We will never forget her because she will always be with us in our hearts. I will cherish all the memories. For I know one day I will see her and my mom and dad and all our relatives again. What a joyous day that will be. I’m so sorry for your heartbroken pain and overwhelming grief. I’m here for you Brian, Bradley, Teenie, and Chrissy. Love From Your Cousin And My Wolfpack, Diane. 💔🙏🏻

My deepest sympathies to all of Verna’s survivors.  Verna was a gentle soul who was a wealth of folk wisdom.  As her health declined she has been sorely missed at LCBA activities.  I will think of her every time I see a yo-yo. But now she is home, healthy and strong.  Till we meet again, your LCBA sister, Terry Marxen
