Valarie J. Edgell, 77

October 30, 2024

Valarie J. Edgell, age 77, of Elizabethtown, passed away at Hospice and Community Care on October 30, 2024 on what would have been her 59th wedding anniversary to her beloved and devoted husband, the late Joseph C. Edgell. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Maria Anita Lutz.

Valarie’s quest and purpose, after her service in the United States Navy, was honoring her husband, Joe, and his military service. Joe enlisted in the US Marine Corps, August 21 1963. On August 18, 1965, he was seriously wounded while serving with Company H, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines in “Operation Starlight” in Vietnam. Lance Corporal Edgell was awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star medal with a Combat “V” for his “heroic achievement.” His military awards also included the Combat Action Ribbon, a Presidential Unit Citation awarded to the 3rd Marine Division for service in Vietnam, Navy Unit Commendation awarded to the 7th Regimental Landing Team for service in Vietnam, the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with one bronze star, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.

After completing his military service, Joe’s civilian employment created the opportunity for him and Valarie to live in Kuwait, Germany, Poland and Chile, in addition to many cities across the US. They eventually settled in Montgomery, TX. Their home was adorned with numerous collections related to the USMC and they proudly displayed a United States of America flag and Marine Corps banner in front of their home.

Valarie enjoyed being outside on her patio watching the birds and tending to her flowers. She also enjoyed cooking and watching FOX News. Her most precious time, however, was spent with her family making memories that will forever be cherished.

Valarie is survived by her sons: Joseph W. Edgell ( Christine) of Leola, Gregory S. Edgell, John R. Edgell of Altoona, PA and Christopher J. (Lindsey) of E-town, PA; nine grandchildren: Brielle, Tanner, Caitlyn, Cameron, Angela, Collin, Jesse, Breonna and Brogan and one great grandchild as well as, her sister Jerry “Sis” Tangert of Salunga. She was preceded in death by her brother Robert C Eisenberger.

Family will receive friends on Friday, November 8, 2024 at Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA. 17543 from 10am to 11am with a celebration of both Joe’s and Valarie’s life to begin at 11am and concluded with military honors for Joe. Interment will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, donations to honor Joe and Valarie may be made to Toys for Tots, https://secure.toysfortots.org/a/donatetoday or Hospice and Community Care, https://www.hospiceandcommunitycare.org/in-honor-in-memory-gifts/.

Condolences to the Family

November 03, 2024

My condolences to the Edgell family. I was sadden to read of Valerie’s passing this morning in the newspaper.  It brought back memories of happier times when I met Valerie while working at the Humane League of Lancaster County.  We had many things in common and struck up our friendship quickly.  She and I adopted black wolfhound-mix puppies that were brought to the shelter.  She chose one of the male dogs and I adopted the female. I still have a photo of the two of us together with our adult wolfhound-mix dogs from the time I visited at her home. The littermates seemed to remember each other and enjoyed their visit together.  Valarie’s male dog towered over my female dog named “Cinder”.  My dog was an ambassador for the Humane League’s pet care education program visiting schools through out Lancaster County.
I also remember how lovingly Valerie spoke about her husband Joe and her family.  I know she will be missed by all that knew her.
