Sue Albertson Walker, 25

Sue Albertson Walker of East Petersburg died on Wednesday, May 9, 2007 at Lancaster General Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Robert and Sara Albertson of Benton, Pennsylvania.  She was the wife of retired United States Congressman Robert Walker.

Mrs. Walker was a celebrated educator at the local, state, and national levels.  For more than a decade she served as Director of Curriculum and Instruction for the School District of Lancaster, Pennsylvania.  Prior to that, in the same district, she was Library/Media Services Coordinator from 1975 – 1988, and a librarian at McCaskey High School.

Her career prior to arriving in the School District of Lancaster included work as a librarian in the Fairfax County Schools, Virginia, and the Benton Area School District in Pennsylvania.  While in the Fairfax County schools she also functioned as a Media Coordinator.

As a teacher she was on adjunct faculty at both Drexel University in Philadelphia, and Millersville University.

Since her retirement from the School District of Lancaster, she worked as an educational consultant, presented at state and national educational conferences, and co-authored a popular education book called “Standards of Practice for Teachers: A Brief Handbook.”

Mrs. Walker was active in educational enterprises beyond her jobs.  In 1976 she was a delegate and a member of the steering committee for the Pennsylvania Governor’s Conference on Libraries and Information Services.  In 1978 she was a delegate to the White House Conference on Libraries.  From 1983 to 1988 she served on the Pennsylvania Governor’s Advisory Council on Libraries.

An alumnus of Millersville University, Mrs. Walker served on the university’s Council of Trustees beginning in 1997 and chaired the Council from 2000 until 2005.  She was also co-chair of Millersville University’s 150th Anniversary Celebration and was a recipient of Millersville Alumni Association’s Distinguished Service Award.

Active in professional organizations, she played major leadership roles in several.  She served on the Board of Directors of the American Association of School Librarians, President of the Pennsylvania School Librarians Association from 1980 to 1982, and a member of its Board from 1982 to 1987.  She was also a member of the Association for Supervisors and Curriculum Development and the National Staff Development Council.

Beyond her educational activities, Mrs. Walker was well known in national, state, and local political circles.  She worked actively with the Lancaster County Republican Women.  She attended G.O.P National Conventions, numerous political and governmental events, and was a well-known congressional wife on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. 

Mrs. Walker is survived by her husband of 39 years, and a sister, Anne Cairns of Newark, Delaware.

Mrs. Walker was a graduate of Millersville University with a B.S. in Education of Syracuse University with an M.S.L.S., and did additional graduate work at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Elizabethtown College, and Drexel University.

She was a member of the Benton Presbyterian Church and regularly attended the Bethany Presbyterian Church in Lancaster.

Interment will be private and held at the East Petersburg Mennonite Cemetery.

A Memorial Service celebrating the life of Sue Albertson Walker will be held on Tuesday, May 15 at 11 AM at the Bethany Presbyterian Church, 25 N. West End Ave., Lancaster, PA.  The family will receive friends from 10AM until the time of the service.  Gifts in her honor may be directed to the Center of Civic Responsibility and leadership at Millersville University, c/o Millersville University Development Office, Duncan Alumni House, Millersville University, Millersville, PA 17551.  Contributions also may be made to the Benton Presbyterian Church, Benton, PA 17814.  Arrangements by Charles F.
