Robert W. Schaum, Jr., 74

December 21, 2018

Robert W. Schaum, Jr., 74, of Lancaster Twp., fondly known as “Poppy” to his grandchildren and daughter’s friends, passed away on Friday, December 21, 2018, at Hospice & Community Care, Mount Joy. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of Robert W. Schaum, Sr. and Edith Mae (Specht) Schaum of Lancaster. Bob was the beloved husband of Shirley M. (Gerlitzki) Schaum, and together they celebrated 48 years of marriage.

Bob graduated from Manheim Township High School and attended Valley Forge Military Academy. For many years, he worked as a long distance truck driver and traveled throughout the US and Canada. His most memorable truck route was to California when he visited his granddaughter, Melissa Tracz, and her husband Arthur. Bob and Shirley enjoyed traveling throughout the eastern US, especially the New England states on their motorcycle. Spending time at their beach retreat in Lewes, DE, was also a favorite past time. Bob had a passion for woodworking and home remodeling. Together with his late son, he enjoyed working on Jeeps and was a member of the Columbia Hill Climbers Four Wheel Drive Club. Later in life, Bob’s true passion was his Masonic journey. He was an active member of the Charles M. Howell Masonic Lodge No. 496, Millersville, where he served as a Junior Deacon. He was also a member of the Valley of Harrisburg of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite and BPOE Lancaster Lodge 134. Bob’s greatest joy was spending time with his family and Masonic brothers.

A loving son, husband and father, Bob is survived by his parents, his wife, and two daughters, Diane Pappas and her husband Greg of Lancaster, and Deborah Zaborowski and her husband Robert of Trappe. Also surviving is his sister Paula L. Smith of Lancaster, 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Richard H. Hart; his paternal grandparents, Leon and Katherine (Weitzel) Schaum; and his maternal grandparents, Cort Specht and Catherine Gwin.

Family and friends are invited to attend services which will take place on Friday, December 28, at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 441 North George Street, Millersville, PA, 17551, where a viewing will take place from 12:30 PM until 2:00 PM, at which time services will begin with Masonic funeral rites. Interment will follow at Conestoga Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Bob’s memory may be offered to the Charles M. Howell Lodge No. 496, 113 West Frederick Street, Millersville, PA, 17551.
