Robert M. “Bob” Going, Esquire, 88

Robert M. “Bob” Going, 88, of Lancaster, PA, passed away on Wednesday, May 4, 2016. He was the loving husband of Margaret M. “Peggy” (Gunselman) Going, to whom he had been married for 63 years. Bob was born in Amsterdam, NY to John J. and Marion (Morton) Going.

Bob graduated from Lancaster Catholic High School in 1945 and then enlisted in the US Navy. He was stationed for three years at the Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Washington, where he served as Director in a Ground Control Approach “GCA” unit. He remained in the Reserve for an additional four years.

After the Navy, Bob graduated from Franklin & Marshall College in 1952 with an A.B. degree in History. He then attended Dickinson School of Law, Carlisle, from which he graduated in 1955.

Bob married Peggy in 1953. They had five children, three of whom followed him in his profession, becoming lawyers.

Beginning the practice of law in 1956, Bob practiced in Lancaster for over 50 years – retiring from Going & Plank at 140 E. King Street. During that time, he was Executive Director and Solicitor for the Lancaster Redevelopment Authority and Director of the Adams-Musser Township Project. He also was a member of the Lancaster City Planning Commission and Assistant City Solicitor.

A lifelong Democrat, Bob served the party in many ways, including running for U.S. Congress in 1968 and acting as Chairman of the Lancaster County Democratic Committee from 1972 through 1975.

Bob was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Hamilton Club, US Navy GCA-ATC Association of Lancaster and the Lancaster and Pennsylvania Bar Associations.

Surviving Bob are his wife, Peggy, and their five children: Pati Going Frey (wife of Phil Frey) of Lancaster, Robert Going, Jr., Esq. of Lancaster, Thomas Going, Esq. (husband of Nancy Goldman Going) of Rosemont, Julia Going Becker, Esq., (wife of Eric Becker, M.D.) of Center Valley, and Marian Going Grill (wife of Todd Grill) of Lancaster. Bob is also survived by 15 grandchildren, of whom he was extremely proud: John, David, Olivia, Joseph, Andrew, Molly, Kevin, Hayden, Ben, Emily, Sam, Alex, Ian, Jesse and Brody. Bob was predeceased by his sister, Elizabeth Going of Lancaster, but is survived by his brother, John E. Going, of New York, New York.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church 558 W. Walnut St., Lancaster, PA 17603 on Tuesday, May 10, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Michael Messner as Celebrant. The family will receive friends at the church on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Private interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Music for Everyone 42 N. Prince St. Lancaster, PA 17603
