Robert L. (Bob) Patterson, 86

March 04, 2023

Robert L. (Bob) Patterson, 86, of Lancaster, entered eternal life on March 4, 2023 while under care at Homestead Village.

Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Robert W. and Elizabeth Jane (Penn) Patterson. Bob was the devoted and loving husband of the late Rhoda Herr Patterson, with whom he shared over 66 years of marriage until her passing on January 9, 2023.

He had an outgoing personality and loved getting to know people. He could talk to anyone and enjoyed helping others. A lifetime salesman, Bob had begun working locally for the American Furniture Company, and then went on to found and own the House of Furniture in Lancaster, which was in business for over 40 years. He took pride in taking good care of his customers and often became an honorary part of their family, throughout his career.

He had a very full, blessed and fruitful life. He loved staying busy, many evenings he would play table tennis, frequently after work he would grab his ping pong bag, take a couple kids and head out to practice. Bob ended up being the state champion table tennis player multiple years and taught his children a love of the game. Games were his favorite past time that he loved to share with his children and grandchildren (in addition to as much time as possible). He enjoyed playing cards, Pokeno, croquet and badminton with them. Pets were always a part of his home too, usually miniature poodles. Bob and Rhoda were dog lovers and occasionally bred their poodles, enjoying the little puppies for the brief time they spent with them. Horse racing was another past time and over the years he ended up owning a few racehorses and some of them did well. In his youth, he was a local marbles tournament champion and loved to teach his kids how to play.

Bob is survived by his children: Dawn M. married to Richard Stratchko of Willow Street, Keith R. Patterson of New Providence, Craig L. married to Carolyn Patterson of Lancaster, and Brenda A. married to John Estep of Lancaster; his 12 grandchildren: Justin Stratchko, Lindsay (Trevor) Kepner, Kelsey (Adrian) Gross, Rachel Stratchko, Daniel Patterson, Tyler Patterson, Nicholas Patterson, Erin (Joseph) McHugh, Alex Patterson, Zachary Estep, Kerri Estep, and Lee Estep: and his 10 great grandchildren: Anthony, Lily Stark, Henry Kepner, Serenydee, Addylin, Jack, and Jocelyn Patterson, Emma, Thomas, and Johnathan Gross.

His family will be receiving friends on Thursday, March 9, 2023 from 1-2PM at the Charles F. Snyder III Funeral Home & Crematory, 2421 Willow Street Pike, Willow Street, PA, with his funeral service to follow at 2PM. Services will be live streamed beginning at 1:40 PM Via this obituary link. Interment to follow in Mellingers Mennonite Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in his memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater PA Chapter, 2595 Interstate Drive, Suite 100, Harrisburg, PA 17110.

Dear patterson Family,
So sorry for another loss to your family so soon after Rhoda’s death.  I have many fond memories of both Rhoda and Bob.  Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend Bob’s service, but my thoughts will be with you.

I remember Bob and Rhoda well from many years of talking to them on varios occasions. They were always very pleasant and friendly. Bob in particular had a keen wit he liked to flash, to keep everyone on their toes. My condolences to the family.

Mr. Patterson was a good man, and funny. He always had a smile on his face. I remember a Twins club picnic at Long’s park when i slipped and fell into the lake, Mr Patterson was there, I think Craig and Keith were also there when I slipped, anyway I told Mr. Patterson I saw this big fish with whiskers, (catfish) after that when I would see him he would ask about the fish with the whiskers and we would laugh. I’m so sorry for your loss please take peace in your memories of your father.
