Richard P. Horton, 86

November 11, 2015

Richard P. Horton, 86 of Lititz passed away Wednesday, November 11, 2015. Richard was born in New Enterprise in Bedford County, PA in 1929. He was one of 14 children in his family. He loved to sing and his favorite subject was math. He graduated from Replogle High School in 1949. He played football and baseball for his high school team. His favorite sport was football where he was the quarterback and captain of the team. It was also during this time when a teacher encouraged him to try public speaking. He did so well, he was asked to be the student speaker at his high school graduation. Richard also liked to accept dares; his funniest story was when he and a friend relocated an outhouse to the front lawn of the high school. Unfortunately, they got caught and had to haul it back and fix it.
During high school and after graduation, Richard worked on a farm. Richard had held a variety of other jobs. He worked for his father logging business and butcher shop. When he moved to Lancaster, he drove a bread truck for Holsum Bakery, worked at RCA, and settled at Alcoa where he was a tool & die maker for 32 years. He was very involved with organizing employee events. After leaving Alcoa, he worked at Precision Form for another 15 years.
Richard had been married to his devoted wife, Bev, for over 44 years. Together they have a son, Richard II, husband of Carrie and he also has a daughter, Melissa, companion of Bruce to his first wife. They have 8 grandchildren: Ashton, Isabelle, Clara Ann, Benjamin, Finnegan, Declan and Keegan and 1 “adopted” granddaughter, Piper. Richard and Bev loved to travel together. They enjoyed taking bus trips, train trips and a memorable anniversary trip to Ireland. Richard always liked to be active and involved, whether it be at home, in church or with his sports. He loved to garden, cook and bake. He sang in the church choir and with the FFA Quartet. He enjoyed bird watching. He played in several bowling leagues, including mixed leagues, and a travel league. However his passion is golf. Richard was a very talented golfer. His highlight was playing in the DuPont Amateur Open in Myrtle Beach, SC.
Richard enjoyed reading novels by John Grisham and he enjoys listening to Country & Western or Christian music. His favorite sports were football and golf. He was a Steelers fan and his favorite golfer was Arnold Palmer.
A Gathering Celebrating Richard’s Life will be held on Saturday, November 21, 2015 between 1-4PM at Scooter’s Restaurant & Bar, 921 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Richard’s memory may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, Greater PA Chapter, 2595 Interstate Dr, Suite 100, Harrisburg, PA 17110.
