Richard E. “Dick” Fund, 92

June 05, 2020

Richard E. “Dick” Fund, 92, of Manheim, passed away Friday, June 5, 2020, at Ephrata Manor. Born in Caldwell, New Jersey, Dick was the son of the late Ellsworth W. and Cecilia (Cunningham) Fund. He was the loving husband of Gladys K. Fund, with whom he would have celebrated 70 years of marriage this year.

Dick proudly served in the Army during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged in 1952, he went to work as an auto mechanic, operating his own repair shop, Fund’s Auto Repair, located in Montclair, New Jersey. Retiring to Lancaster County in 1990, he continued to work by assisting his two sons at their auto mechanic shop, Manheim Tire & Auto Center. Despite slowing down over the past year, he continued to go to that shop where he enjoyed drinking a cup of coffee with his sons and spending time talking and catching up with other shop mechanics and customers.

Of the Catholic Faith, Dick was a parishioner of St. James Catholic Church, in Lititz. He enjoyed hunting, boating, and tinkering with old things. He loved spending time in upstate New York with his family and friends, where he owned a 200-acre hunting camp, infamously referred to by his friends as the Vet’s Gun Club, and by his family as the “farm.” Dick also cherished his trips to his lake house in Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey, where he taught many of his grandchildren how to waterski, all of whom lovingly referred to him as “Pop.” Above all else, Dick loved talking to people and spending time with them, and he was always willing to lend a helping hand to his friends and family, whether that be picking up parts for his sons’ business, picking up his grandchildren at a sporting practice, or picking up a buddy who wanted to go grab a beer.

In addition to his wife, Gladys, Dick is survived by his children, Margaret “Peg” Blankenmyer, of Manheim; William “Bill,” husband of Karen, of Lititz; and Jeffrey, husband of Diane, of Ephrata; his grandchildren: Julie Blankenmyer; Eric Blankenmyer; Lauren Fund; Daniel Fund, husband of Katy; Allison Droegemueller, wife of Justin; Lindsey Snavely, wife of Chris; and Bryan Fund; and great-grandchildren, Lucy and Lyla. Dick was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Fund.

Services for Dick will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to PA Wounded Warriors.

I am sorry to hear for your loss.  Mr.Fund was a very respectable and good man.  I remember the first day I met him at the Vet’s Club.  He was always kind to me and was always up for a conversation when I came in from hunting.  It’s going to be different this hunting season without him around.  However, I know he’ll be there.

I read about Richard’s death in the Star Ledger. I am so sorry for your loss. Death of a loved one is very distressing even if the person is elderly or sick. The Bible teaches us that death was not part of God’s original plan. He wanted mand to live forever, in perfect health, on a paradise earth. Man disobeyed God and brought about sin and death to the human race. God’s plan will still be realized. Isaiah 55:11 states, “So my word that goes out of my mouth will be. It will not return to me without results, but it will certainly accomplish whatever is my delight. It will have sure success in what I send it to do.” The Bible talks about a resurrection of those who have died. (Acts 24:15, John 5:28, 29) The Bible account in John 11:1-44 details a resurrection Jesus performed and which gives us the certainty that the resurrection of our loved ones will occur. The word resurrection in the Bible literally means “a standing up again” and “revival of the dead”. The provision for resurrection of the dead is a magnificent expression of God’s undeserved kindness. It displays his wisdom and power and is a means by which his original purpose regarding the earth and humans will be carried out. There is such a wealth of knowledge and hope we can gain from studying the Bible. Sincerely, Paula
