Richard “Dick” Lauriello, 90

February 16, 2021

Richard “Dick” Lauriello, 90, died Feb. 16, peacefully at home.

Born in Philadelphia on June 14, 1930, he was the son of Anthony and Anna (DiLullo) Lauriello. He was the husband of Anne with whom he celebrated 68 years of marriage on Jan. 24.

Richard attended St. Rita’s Parochial School and LaSalle College High School and LaSalle College in Philadelphia. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1948 and served during the Korean War.

After working with his father as a tile setter and helping in the family’s hardware store at 17th and Ritner streets, Richard began a career in sales, eventually in the manufactured housing business. He advanced to sales manager, then to plant manager, then to vice president. He served as extraordinary minister and adult server for funeral Masses at St. John Neumann Church where he was a member for 43 years. He attained certification as a catechist for the Diocese of Harrisburg and was RCIA session leader for 24 years. He also delivered communion to Regional Hospital patients and cooked community meals at St. Mary’s Church.

Whenever asked how he was, the answer was always the same “Life is good.” He was a gourmet cook, avid reader and history buff. He was a true patriot who honored God, country and the Constitution. He often reminisced about his colorful life growing up in his South Philadelphia neighborhood. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, deep love of family and abiding integrity in all things.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife and daughters Maria Elena Donahue and Donna (Lon) Walker, both of Lancaster PA, sons Richard A. Lauriello Jr. of Pompano Beach FL, Steven (Kym) of Harleysville PA, Mark (Sharon) of Columbia PA, Robert (Christine) of Dillsburg PA, his brother Raymond (Chris) of Cape May Courthouse, NJ, and grandchildren Danielle (Andrew) Komito, Carly Lauriello, Richard Walker, Samantha Jo Lauriello, Julia Donahue, Katherine and Timothy Lauriello. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved sister Mary Greider.

A Mass of Christian burial will take place at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 601 E. Delp Rd., on Saturday, Feb. 20, with visitation at 10 a.m. and Mass at 11 a.m. There’s limited attendance available at the church. Masks and social distancing requested. The Mass will be live streamed (sjnlancaster.org) and we encourage this, especially for those who must travel. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice and Community Care, 685 Good Drive, P.O. Box 4125, Lancaster 17604 or, because of Richard’s belief in Catholic education, to St. John Neumann Catholic School, 601 E. Delp Road, Lancaster, 17601.

Condolences to the Family

February 22, 2021

Dear Anne, M.E., Julia and all of Dick’s beloved family, We want to offer our sincere condolences to each of you. Dick was such a good man, a faithful Catholic and an amazing example to others of selflessness. He always greeted us with his beautiful smile of authenticity. As so accurately stated, when asked how he was doing, he never complained, rather always replied “Life is good” – never focusing on himself but always on the other. He will truly be missed by us and the entire St. John Neumann community, most especially his “daily Mass” family who witnessed him and Anne, side by side, for many years every day of the week. Their life together was a true example to follow. Life isn’t always easy – it’s often very difficult – but Dick knew, as does Anne, that with Jesus as your Lord and Savior, Life IS Good when you put God and others first. JOY = Jesus Others You. Dick knew how to make it that way for all. May he rest in the eternal peace that he, and we, so ardently believed awaited him. We pray for all of you. Sincerely, Joe and Mary McCafferty

Anne and Family … I so admired Dick for his faith and, beyond that, his person.  He always, and I mean always, greeted me with a most friendly smile, warm handshake and kind word.  I do know that on some days he was feeling less than well.  But, that didn’t deter him from his usual greeting. That action speaks to my point.  I was in awe of his spiritual knoweledge and wisdom.  He was quite a man to be admired.  I participated in his funeral Mass on-line.  I so welcomed Decon Pete Jupin’s comments as well as those of the family member.  My eyes were moist during each of these.  May you be comforted by joy filled memories of your times together.  I will try to do the same.

Dear Anne,
It was such a surprise, reading about Dick’s recent passing. In this time of COVID, we have become so disconnected that events like this catch us off guard. I will always cherish and remember fondly the time we spent together in RCIA instructional classes. Joann and I would always look for both of you in church, but we have been streaming mass for so many months now that we lost touch. Dick was clearly a man of God and I know that he is with him now. May God watch over you and your family in this difficult time.

Dear Aunt Anne and Family, We are sorry to hear of Uncle Dick’s passing, although we are unable to be with you during these difficult times, there are not enough words to express our condolences to you all. It was apparent to me that Uncle Dick expressed an abundance of class.  We believe that he is in heaven.  May God bless you and all my cousins. Love always, Cousins Anthony and Mary Ann

Dear Ann, Just founf out today that Dick had passed away. Cannot say it was a big shock because we are all in that period of our life when we are losing great people right and left. Dick was one of those. We had some wonderful meetings with Scott Rudy (another great man) Sister Helen ( a great woman) preparing for RCIA meetings, Sunday readings with the candidates, then the general meetings where Dick gave one of the best presentations on the Eucharist I had ever heard.  You were a really great part of all those meetings too. Jo Ann has parkinsons and is always in danger of falling so she is at home here most of th time. I still work part time but we are enjoying our life together. Thought we were doing good with 54 years together but you and Dick! 68 years! Hope to see you in the morning. Much love and “Pelligrini” Denny and Jo Ann McMahon.

My Dear Godfather,
With all your prayers, my Brady made it to seventeen years.  His BD was the 15th and God called you home on the 16th.  Thank you for always thinking of him.  Your positive attitude will live in me throughout my life.  I was blessed to have you in my life.  Keep those prayers coming Brady’s way.  Love to you and can not forget my mom.
