Richard A. Pohner, 89
August 30, 2025
Richard A. Pohner, 89, passed away on August 30, 2025 from complications of Alzheimer’s Disease.
He was the husband of Deborah A. Lebo Pohner, with whom he shared 63 years of marriage this past August 18th. Born in Enhaut, Dauphin County, he was the son of the late Joseph, Jr. and Theresa Handfest Pohner.
Richard was a graduate of Franklin & Marshall College, where he earned a full scholarship, playing football, basketball, and track and field, throwing the javelin. After graduation, he immediately began his teaching career at Warwick High School, where he taught history for 32 years, until retiring in 1989. After retirement, he did residential painting and made deliveries for the former Lititz Bookstore.
An animal lover in every sense, he was an expert birder, participating in raptor counts at Hawk Mountain and was a member of the Second Mountain and Indiantown Gap Birding Clubs. He also, in years past, enjoyed fishing and canoeing.
In addition to his wife, Deborah, Richard is survived by his children: Carole Anne Hackman married to Scott of Ephrata, Christian E. Pohner of Clay, and Richard Pohner Jr. of Lancaster; and by his grandson, Jason Hackman. He was preceded in death by his siblings: Joseph, Adam, William, Mary Semic, and Kathryn Zugay.
Friends may visit with Richard’s family on Tuesday, September 9, 2025 from 10-11AM at the Spacht-Snyder Family Funeral Home & Crematory, 127 S, Broad St., Lititz, PA with the Memorial Service to follow at 11AM. One of the best teachers to have ever walked the halls of WHS. I also worked with him at the bookstore making deliveries. Always a smile and a personality that make you happy as well.
Sorry for your loss, truly a missed man. Tom benjamin

Mr. Phoner was my junior high football and basketball coach. We played basketball in the summer league against him and the rest of the teachers. He was always willing to advise us as we grew older. I really admired and respected him. He also was a very good friend to us. May he rest in peace. Bob Wolfe Jr.
