Rev. Robert R. Wegehoft, 84
January 14, 2023
Rev. Robert R. “Bob” Wegehoft, 84, of Lancaster, PA, was called to his heavenly home by his Lord and Savior on January 14, 2023. He was the husband of Irene Finger Wegehoft, with whom he shared 59 years of marriage this past August 3rd. Born in Centralia, Illinois, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Beatrice Hubbell Wegehoft.
Bob received a Bachelor of Arts degree in organ performance at MacMurray College, Jacksonville, IL; a Master of Sacred Music degree at Union Theological Seminary in New York City; and his divinity degree at Lutheran School of Theology, Rock Island, Illinois. Ordained at Rockefeller Chapel on the University of Chicago campus, he was a Lutheran pastor for almost 56 years, serving at Faith Lutheran Church in Moline, IL; Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Romeoville, IL; St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Arenzville, IL; St. Mark Ev. Lutheran Church in Davenport, IA; Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clinton, IA.; and St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Strasburg, PA. He also served as interim pastor at St. John Lutheran Church, Mt. Wolf, PA, and Hill Lutheran Church, Lebanon, PA., and he did several years of pulpit supply. In May 2017, he returned to St. Michael’s, Strasburg, as interim pastor. He was a member of St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lancaster.
Bob sang in the Seminary Choir and gave an organ recital before each concert on tour, also directing the choir for a year before moving from the Rock Island area. He played for numerous events, served on church synod and conference committees, sang with the Ephrata Cloister Choir in a Germany tour, and he, Irene, and their children gave many musical programs for church and civic groups and at nursing homes.
Never at a loss for a joke, Bob had people laughing wherever he went. His favorite was, “What is Darth Vader’s wife’s first name? I think it is Ella – Ella Vader!”
Bob loved spending time with his family, whom he adored. He enjoyed playing keyboard, especially piano and organ duets with Irene, traveling, reading, coloring, seeing shapes in clouds, and relishing the beauty of flowers and sunsets. He had a habit of answering phone calls with the words, “This is the day the Lord has made,” which often left people thinking he was the answering machine. He never saw anyone as a stranger, but as a child of God, and he shared his favorite morning prayer card and conversation everywhere.
In addition to his wife, Irene, Bob is survived by his children: Debra, married to Jesse Theys of Duncansville, PA; Lisa, married to Tim Swartz of Palmyra, PA; John, married to Elizabeth of Cleona, PA; Dr. David Wegehoft of Revere Beach, MA; and Abby, Haley, Ella, Zachary, Benjamin, and Rachel, his six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Harry Wegehoft. Bob’s family wishes to thank the incredible medical staff who took such good care of him and all who prayed for him. You are all blessings.
Friends will be received by Bob’s family on Saturday, February 4, 2023, at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Road, Lancaster, PA, from 9-11 A.M., with the memorial service to follow at 11 A.M. Interment will be private. The service will be livestreamed via the St. Peter’s website at 11 A.M. at stpeterslutheran.org. To honor his memory, we know Bob would encourage us all to love and serve God and others and live with a spirit of gratitude. Contributions may be made in Bob’s memory to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church at the above address or to St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, 40 East Main St., Strasburg, PA 17579.

I remember him from St Mark’s in Davenport. I remember that he always had a smile, and that he was one of the kindest people I had met in my life at that point. Rest In Peace

I told my daughter a really bad joke this morning and declared it a “Wegehoft Joke.” She asked me what that meant and I told her some of my memories with Pastor Wegehoft at summer camp in Maquoketa, IA. Then I got curious as to where he was now and found this page. Belated condolences to the entire Wegehoft family. Thank you for sharing him with us. We are all better people because of him.

From the moment we set foot in St Michaels Lutheran Church in Strasburg in October 2004 after moving to the area and looking for a spiritual home, we were welcomed by Bob putting the onus on the congregation to greet us and by Bob and Irene’s two grandchildren Abby and Haley singing Lord, Listen to Your Children Praying. We knew immediately this was the place for us. Later that very evening with our unpacked boxes everywhere Bob and Irene arrived unannounced on our doorstep with their apple dumpling ministry and this began a long and very dear friendship. I will miss my holy hugs and organ/piano duets and corny jokes, but mostly I will miss our friendship in the Lord and your inspiration. Jesus loves you and so do I.

From members of the Ephrata Cloister Chorus,
Dear Irene, I was saddened to read of Bob’s passing. I remember fondly (as do those who were able to travel as part of the Ephrata Cloister Chorus to Germany, almost a decade ago! I remember our fun times together and still have the picture of us sitting together enjoying a meal in Munich, I believe. Blessings and peace to you and your family!

My deepest sympathies Irene and to your entire family. Your husband was such a loving and kind person! I was so sad when you and your beautiful family moved away from Clinton but I know you are loved wherever you are. There are just no words but do know that you are being thought of during this difficult time and have been thought of many times throughout the years. Cheryl McRoberts

I give thanks to have known Bob upon meeting him and Irene at the Lancaster community concerts. He and my husband Dan met during intermission. They were both working the room with their extreme friendliness and immediately became friends. My sincere condolences to you Irene. You both added so much joy to our lives when we met. We loved your concerts and your ministry of music. Lovingly, Mimsie Brookes

My family was blessed to know Pastor Wegehoft- what an amazing gentle man! He baptized my kids and the first 4 grandkids! I taught Sunday School at Immanuel Lutheran in Clinton ,Iowa- my sister Rita was married there as was my daughter Misty – I also sang in the choir there as did Pastor and his lovely wife Irene played the piano every Sunday- What great memories I have of him! So sad to hear this news. Judy Sexton

Pastor Wegehoft came to Immanuel Lutheran to take over for Pastor Anderson and church was never the same. He had a delightful sense of humor and was a joy to be around. He married my husband, Bob, and I in 1986 and never tired of telling Bob that he “tied that knot so tight it will never come undone”. And we are still going strong 37 years later! Pastor and Mrs. Wegehoft played a piano/organ duet of “How Great Thou Art” at our wedding which was absolutely stunning! I never knew sermons could be funny, entertaining, and informative until Pastor Wegehoft came to Clinton. With gratitude and sympathy… Kristina and Robert Suominen

My family is blessed to have been able to share part of his journey on this earth. It seemed God placed him where he was needed , when a need was there. Bob and Irene’s ministry touched my heart and will always be there. Till we meet again….. Deh Hendrie

I met Pastor Wegehoft one warm summer night as I was riding my motorcycle home through Strasburg, Pennsylvania. I rode passed St. Michael’s Lutheran Church and saw the lights were on at around 11:30 PM, and so I turned around and went back to investigate who was there at that late hour on a Saturday night. I walked into the church and startled him, as he was standing in the kitchen area trimming the wicks and polishing the brass candle rings that would sit next to the pulpit on Sundays. We almost instantly became friends, and every chance I could stop there again on a late Saturday night I would. A few years later he would speak at my wedding and everyone just loved what he had to say. A decade later he would speak at my mother’s funeral as she requested. What a kind hearted, non-judgemental soul and servant, and a friend to everyone he met.

Pastor Bob Wegehoft: Spiritual giant, outstanding pastor, amazing musician! First reaction: Overwhelmed with profound, deep sadness. Next thought: Pastor Bob and Irene Wegehoft: Pure joy! Both…absolute pure joy! And, when they are on pianos or the piano and organ together in a duet: Wow! His humor: just wonderful!
I can hear the words ringing in my ears from every time he picked up the phone, indeed: “This is the day that the Lord has made!”
One of my most favorite pastors in all of life! The blessing of being in life and ministry with Pastor Wegehoft, Irene, and the family is riveting.
“Well done good and faithful servant!”: beyond measure.
