Peter D. Davenport, 83

January 11, 1938 - February 16, 2021

Peter D. Davenport, 83, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on February 16, 2021. Pete grew up in Forest Hills, NY and after many memories at Public School 144, attended Trinity School for high school. He enjoyed playing baseball and cheering on his beloved Dodgers. Pete attended Tufts University where he joined the Theta Delta Chi fraternity and met his future wife, Sylvia. They both graduated in 1959.

After college, Pete joined the Army and was part of the 101st Airborne Division where he served proudly as a medic. He began his professional career with Corning Glass Works in the laboratory supply industry. Throughout his twenty-plus-year career with Corning, he held numerous positions in the sales and marketing departments. In 1981, Pete joined Kontes Glass in Vineland, NJ, and moved with his family to West Chester, PA. Pete finished his long and distinguished career in the laboratory supply business with Thomas Scientific when he retired in 1999.

Pete‘s real passion was cars. He purchased his first sports car, a Porsche 911, in 1972, and as the years progressed his collection of classic and performance automobiles grew and grew. While in upstate New York he rarely missed a race at Watkins Glen. He loved working as a pit marshal and volunteering at track events. He and Sylvia would travel the country to many of the country’s top automotive concourse events. He loved all aspects of the automobile – collecting, driving, racing, and the artwork. He also loved spending time with his family at their home on Lido Beach.

His other passion was his eight grandchildren. He loved interacting and being with them. You would always find him on the floor playing, coloring, or just telling them an engaging story. He will be deeply missed by them all.

Pete is survived by his wife, Sylvia (Tilly) Davenport; his children, Scott Davenport, husband of Diane, Cindy Borger, wife of Lawrence, and Sandra Simpson, wife of Paul; his eight grandchildren, Erica, Peter, Julia, Tommy, Hannah, Caroline, Jack, and Daniel; and his sister, Linda Spire, wife of Hank,

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Sylvia, We were looking thru address records today, and Nikki looked up Peter Davenport in West Chester, which is how we found his obituary! Thor is shocked! Reading the sentences about Peter with his grandkids is so similar to Thor’s personality that it’s no wonder they were good boyhood friends. Thor has many fond memories of his buddies in Forest Hills. Losing Peter, even from a distance, is very sad to all who knew him.

We last saw you and Peter in Florida – 1981 when our son Tor was born. (I’m still using the Corning Ware gift!)

Dear Sylvia, We saw the flag lowered last night at Radley Run CC, and we are sorry for your loss of Peter. We extend our sympathy to you and your family and may God Bless all of you. Peter and you were so generous to our CC and the Mews, and we appreciate it very much. Love, Carol and Bill Rice
