Paul D. Miller, 71

Paul D. Miller, 71, of Lititz, PA, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 10, 2012, surrounded by his loved ones.  He was the husband of Judith M. Jones Miller, with whom he celebrated 47 years of marriage this past February 13th.  Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of Paul B. Miller of Harleysville and the late Anne M. Adams Miller.  He was also the stepson of Dorothy Miller.

During his 37 year teaching career in Warwick School District, Paul taught all grade levels and retired in 2000.  A veteran of the US Air Force, Paul served in the Philippines where he acquired a love of travel that continued through the rest of his life.

Known best for his gentle guidance, quick wit, dry sense of humor, and “favorite teacher” status, Paul loved talking with friends and strangers alike.  Other interests included reading, crossword puzzles, kayaking, losing himself in his watercolors, walking on the beach, and lending a helping hand to neighbors and friends.

In addition to his wife, Judy, he is survived by his children: Todd D., married to Jennifer Miller of Locust Grove, VA, Megan E., married to Benjamin R. Snell of Lancaster, his 4 cherished grandchildren Sean, Lauren, Liam, and Julian, and by his sister, Judith A., married to Alan Stefano of Elverson, PA.

Paul was an active member of Redeemer Lutheran Church for over 40 years, having served on church council, in the senior choir, as a youth leader, and co-founder of the Puppet Ministry program.  Friends will be received at Redeemer, 500 Pearl St., Lancaster, PA 17603 on Saturday, October 20, 2012 from 10-11AM, with his Celebration of Life Service to follow at 11AM.

The family would like to thank the staff of 8 Lime at LGH for their exceptional care and friendship.

In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in Paul’s memory to the Paul D. Miller Memorial Fund at Redeemer Lutheran Church, at the above address, or to the Leukemia-Lymphoma Society of Central PA, 2405 Park Drive, Suite 100, Harrisburg, PA 17110.  To send an online condolence, please visit Snyder Funeral Home.com. I just wanted to let you know that my thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this time. Part of the reason that I am a teacher is because of my favorite memories of Mr. Miller’s class. His loving and caring personality along with his humor and teasing of my crazy crush on Tom Selleck are forever in my heart.

Shannon (Tolley) Plantholt

One of my favorite teachers. Definitely learned a lot from him. My best to the family.

Dan Raiser (former student)

Dear Judy, Todd, Megan, & Family,

Although I went to Warwick, I never had the pleasure of having Paul as a teacher, but growing up in the house directly next door to you since I was 3 years old has given me many reasons to love Paul and your family!  I have so many memories I can’t even list them but I am thankful to have had my last memory of Paul to be when my mom, Sam, and I brought dinner over at the end of August and we got to sit and talk for several hours.  I have often told my parents that the Millers and the Gardners are the BEST neighbors anyone would be blessed to know – Paul often would come over and snow blow our driveway after doing his own and think nothing of helping any other way he could, that’s just the wonderful person he was.  And if I was walking or driving by and he was out mowing the lawn he would stop every time just to chat for a few minutes and always make me laugh with that humor of his.  When my brother made the decision to join the US Air Force, Paul was a great help to my parents in giving some insight into that as well.  I can’t say enough about how wonderful a person he was and he will truly be missed!  It’s hard to believe I won’t see Paul and Bill outside talking at the end of the Gardner’s driveway anymore.  We are praying for your family and even though I don’t live on Brusen Drive anymore, know my parents are still next door if you need ANYTHING Judy, and I’m happy to be there anytime as well.
We love you!!!
April (Winebarger) & Sam Yoder

My mom just called me and told me of Paul’s passing. I am sorry for your loss. Paul was such a sweet man. He was one of my favorite teachers. I have some vivid memories of fun times in his classroom. I felt he was one of the few teachers who really got me thinking. His sense of humor was another trait I loved. As a neighbor I can still picture him tending to the yard, and I enjoyed many chats with him as we roamed the neighborhood as kids.

He also had a special twinkle to his eye that will always be remembered. Love to your whole family at this time.

Judy, Todd, Megan:

Terri and I were shocked and saddened to learn of Paul’s passing. We knew he was hospitalized, then home for a bit, and then hospitalized again. Please know we are thinking of you all and praying for you in this difficult time. It was, and still is, a pleasure counting him a fellow saint and believer in Christ. He is now where we will be one day. I look forward to our reunion in Heaven. He is now truly in the Air Force!

To the family of the late, great Mr. Miller,

Mr. Miller is truly an exceptional man, mentor, and teacher. He is one of the reasons I got into education. Social Studies was never my strong suite, however he made learning fun, exciting, and challenging. There are a few things I remember from my days as a student…however "Fjord: I narrow, deep bay, or inlet of the sea, that lies between steep cliffs" was never lost in my memory, just like the utmost respect I have for Mr. Miller. I only got to spend a year in his classroom but the memory and impact he had on me will last a lifetime. I am deeply sorry for the loss to the entire family!

With great admiration and deepest condolences,

Justin M Young (former student)

Dear Judy and family, we can’t begin to tell you how sad we are about Paul’s death. Such a wonderful person he was not to mention the fantastic teacher. Our sons still say he was one of their favorite teachers. He will always be remembered. He always had a smile for you when you saw him, he would walk into the district office and greet me with that smile. We were out of town and missed the service so please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. Our love and sympathy to you and the kids.

I am happy to say that I have known him, and he surely will be missed.

I had Mr Miller as a teacher 30 years ago and I will never forget the impact he had on me as a student. He was funny, kind, thoughtful, patient and most importantly, passionate about his job. Dear Miller Family
Your family is in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.  I had Mr. Miller in 6th grade(1981-82) and loved every minute of his class!  I will always remember his smile, laughter, and positive attitude.  His passion for teaching, love of reading, and genuine care for his students made him my favorite teacher!!  He had more of an impact on me (and other students) then you will ever know.  He will be greatly missed.

The angels got a great one this past week, that’s for sure! Mr. Miller is one of the greatest teachers I have ever had, part of the reason that I became an educator. He was a true, kind and compassionate man. My thoughts and prayers are with the whole family as you find peace and begin to heal in this very difficult time.

To the entire family
Your Temecula family sends our love and prayers to you all.  Paul was a wonderful friend to all and was loved in Temecula by many.

Robin Gilliland

My condolences to Todd, Megan and the entire family.  Mr. Miller was one of my favorite teachers and always had a way of getting us to learn something and make us laugh at the same time.  I was fortunate to be classmates with Todd and Megan and got to enjoy him as well during those years.  He will be greatly missed!

My thoughts and prayers are with the Miller family.  I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Miller’s passing.
Education classes often require students to list the characteristics of a wonderful teacher, and as I compiled my list, I had Mr. Miller in mind.  Later, when I taught middle school, I often asked myself what Mr. Miller would do in a given situation before I decided to act.  He taught me so many years ago, but I can still remember the warmth of his smile, the kindness in his eyes and his lovely personality.
Often people wonder if they will make a difference during their time on Earth; and Mr. Miller was truly one who inspired, motivated and impacted many lives.

Jolene Battaglia (Risser)

To the Miller family,
Our prayers are with you at the loss of such a wonderful man. Every time we saw him in town he stopped to talk, to tell us about his beloved children and grandchildren, and to ask us about our girls—whom he remembered by name even after many years. What a gentle, caring, loving, kind and compassionate man he was! The love he had for his wife, family, friends and students could be seen in his eyes. He was our children’s favorite teacher; he made a difference in their lives. I am saddened to never see him or talk to him again. All who knew him were truly blessed.
