Nancy Jane Rohrer, 71

March 08, 2017

Nancy Jane (Shupp) Rohrer, age 71, of East Petersburg, having fought the good fight, reached her earthly journey’s end on March 8th, 2017 in her home with her husband and daughters by her side.

A life-long resident of Lancaster County, Nancy was born on April 14th, 1945, to the late Ralph and Evelyn (Heisey) Shupp. She lived her entire married life on an ancestral farm in East Petersburg with Tobias H. Rohrer, her husband of 48 years, who survives her. Home and family were a priority for Nancy as evidenced by the love she shared with her husband and the deeply-seated joy she received through her close relationship with her two daughters, Elizabeth Rohrer of East Petersburg and Mary Neville, wife of Troy Neville of Lancaster. In addition to her husband and daughters, she is survived by the following sisters and brothers: Barbara Shupp, Lancaster; Susan, wife of Michael Morrow of Palmyra; David Shupp, Pinehurst, North Carolina; and Michael Shupp, husband of Wendy (Ginder), Denver; as well as several beloved nieces and nephews.

Nancy was a 1963 graduate of Cocalico High School. After graduation, her compassion for others led her to choose a career in nursing. In 1966 she graduated from the Reading Hospital School of Nursing where she received the “Nightingale Award for Excellence in Nursing and Bedside Care.” Through the years, she continued her formal nursing education and graduated summa cum laude from Lebanon Valley College In 1984 with a Bachelor’s degree in nursing. Nancy later received a certification in school nursing from Millersville University In 1989. Her final public nursing practice was as a school nurse in both the Hempfield and Conestoga Valley school districts.

Cultivating her spirituality was of great Importance to Nancy. Originally baptized into the Church of the Brethren, she later shared her spiritual gifts at Trinity United Church of Christ in East Petersburg after her marriage to Tobias in 1968. At Trinity she displayed her faith and encouraging nature through activities like teaching church school, serving on the Altar Guild, participating in the Prayer Shawl Ministry and serving as a spiritual friend to Confirmands. Nancy also practiced her commitment to helping and giving to others by making hundreds of comfort pillows over the years for the ill and the home-bound. A special joy for Nancy was the spiritual growth and direction she received through her
participation in activities at the Kairos School of Spiritual Formation at the Jesuit Center in Wernersville. She also greatly enjoyed tending her flowers and making her famous chocolate chip cookies.

Services will be held at Trinity United Church of Christ, 2340 State Rd, East Petersburg, PA on Saturday, April 22 at 2PM with Pastor Chris Rankin officiating. A private family interment will be in East Petersburg Mennonite Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Nancy’s memory may be made to a local organization of your choosing that supports the wellbeing of women (e.g. Clare House, Bird Ministries Inc, Milagro House and the YWCA).

Nancy was a classmate of mine at Cocalico.  I met her in 8th grade and immediately felt her warmth and friendship.  She was a sweet, gentle, caring person who was also smart and pretty.  We enjoyed our conversations and shared smiles passing in the hallways.  Please know that my sympathy and prayers are with all of you.

Tobe- Countless times over the years I have been thankful for the many lessons learned while I worked on your farm. Things like the value of hard work, the cooperation of family members, and the loving devotion between husband and wife. I’ve been blessed with a wife who possesses many of the same qualities that I saw in Nancy. Such a sweet, kind, gentle spirit. In her modest way, she set a high standard. Thank you and God bless.

Nancy was a faithful one at Kairos. She volunteered in the office often a few days prior to our retreats. She lovingly helped prepare name tags for faculty, students and guests praying for each one. We will miss her very much!
Grace, love & peace to her family,

While it’s never easy to express feelings one has for the loss of a parent especially one who has shaped the lives of her children and has had such a profound impact on the people who have been a part of her life. While I’ve never had the opportunity to meet Nancy, I’ve been truly blessed by knowing her daughter Elizabeth. Thank you Nancy, my life is better for knowing Liz and the grace, patience and caring qualities that you have bestowed upon her and no doubt all whose lives you touched. God’s loving hands are upon you now.

I was saddened to learn of Nancy’s passing. She was such a kind and generous person who helped my family in so many ways.  The last time I visited Trinity, I told her that the Light of God shines brightly through her. Her sincerity and compassion always made me feel special and renewed. For me, Nancy stands as shining example of a life well lived. Peace be with dear Nancy’s soul and with all who love her.

Dear Tobe and family,  It is with deep regret that we can’t attend Nancy’s memorial service. I would love to meet the daughters she loved and mentioned so often, to be with you in this time of celebrating who she was, sit with you in sorrow. She was such a sweet, giving person and I loved knowing her.  From Kairos School to professional relationship to friend, she was the real deal. Yes, she had her quirks and wiorries, as we all do, but her heart was made of pure gold. I loved the times we laughed together, went deep into spiritual conversations, meditated and loved God together.  Since we moved to VA, I have really missed her; I can only imagine how much you all will miss her earthly presence now. Knowing she is at home completely with Divine Love is comforting, but grief is so real too.  May you find real moments of comfort from God, wisdom for all the decisions and changes you will face, and peace for sleep and going on. Much love to all of you, and ongoing prayers. You are so much in our heart and thoughts.    Sharon Landis, for Jay too

Nancy grew up on Walnut Street in Denver,PA. I spent many hours in her home, as we grew up together. We accompanied choruses on piano together at Cocalico Schools. The world has lost a smart, kind, and talented person. My condolences to her family members as they grieve this great loss.
