Melvin R. Grill, Jr., 84

Melvin R. Grill, Jr., age 84, passed away on July 29, 2024. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Melvin R. and Violet (Wenger) Grill, Sr.

After graduating from J. P. McCaskey High School, Mel went on to have a successful career at Federal Mogul/NTN where he retired after 47 years of work. He was a lifetime member of United Steelworkers Local 1035 and the Recording Secretary for 35 years. The center of Mel’s life was the Chesapeake Bay where he spent most of his life and was an advocate for Bay conservation. He was an avid fisherman, loved boating and enjoyed watching sports as he was an devoted fan of the Phillies, Eagles and Orioles.

Mel is survived by his children: Debra DeCaro (wife of Paul), Sandra Osborn (wife of Jeffrey) and Melvin R. Grill, III; 4 grandchildren: Samantha DeCaro, Paul J. DeCaro, III, Julianna Daly and Jeffrey Osborn; 2 great grandchildren: Austin and Ethan DeCaro; 1 sister Doris Brenneman and 2 nieces: Jennifer Hostetter and Jill Brenneman.

Along with his parents, Mel is preceded in death by his companion of 35 years DiAnn Platt and a brother-in-law Paul Brenneman.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Chesapeake Bay Foundation.

Internment will be private.

We are saddened to hear of Mel’s passing. Though we have not been in touch in recent years, we hold fond memories of softball games with Faith UCC where Mel played as an enthusiastic catcher. Those were good times indeed!!!He will not be forgotten!
