Matthew “Matt” Paul Gegg, 95

June 03, 2025

Matthew “Matt” Paul Gegg, 95, of Bausman, PA, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2025. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Matthew and Anna (Armbruster) Gegg. Matt was the beloved husband of Dolores (Phelan) Gegg; they celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary on February 14th.

A 1948 graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School, Matt went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from Millersville State College in 1957. He was inducted into the Sigma Chapter of Phi Sigma Pi honors fraternity. In 1960, he received a Master’s Degree in Education from Temple University and later completed postgraduate coursework at Franklin & Marshall College, Millersville University, Albright College, and others.

A U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, Matt served aboard the U.S.S. Worcester (CL-144) as a Petty Officer. He earned the Good Conduct Medal, the Navy Occupation Service Medal with European Clasp, and the National Defense Service Medal. He was a proud member of the Korean War Veterans Association of Lancaster.

Matt dedicated 28 years to teaching in the Lancaster Township School District (which later merged with the School District of Lancaster). He taught Life Science and Biology, coached boys’ basketball, and served as Athletic Director. He also represented District 3 as the Junior High School Representative in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Association. In addition, Matt was a longtime member of the Lancaster Officials Club, officiating swimming and track meets.

In 1963, the Pennsylvania Science Teachers Association recognized Matt as one of the top ten science teachers in the state. That same year, he was selected by Pennsylvania Power & Light to attend a national conference on the peacetime use of atomic energy in Chicago, IL.

Matt was actively involved in the City-County Science Fair for many years, serving twice as its director. He attended International Science Fairs in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Fort Worth, Texas.

A devoted Catholic, Matt was a member of St. Philip the Apostle Church in Millersville, where he served as an usher for many years. More recently, he became a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Lancaster.

A gifted musician, Matt performed in the concert and marching bands at both Lancaster Catholic High School and Franklin & Marshall College. He was a member of the Rohrerstown Community Band and performed with the Landler Kapelle German Band for 72 years, eventually becoming its Kapellmeister.

He was also a dedicated member of the Lancaster Liederkranz, where he was honored with honorary membership in recognition of his many years of service in the Haus Band and on various committees.

As an amateur oil painter, Matt received numerous awards for his entries in the Lancaster Senior Art Show.

He and his wife, Dolores, enjoyed traveling together across the United States and Canada, especially to Florida, Las Vegas, and Branson, MO.

In addition to his wife, Matt is survived by two daughters: Stephanie Ann, and Michele Ann, wife of Shawn Legge, of Harrisburg, PA. He is also survived by a granddaughter, Amanda; twin step-grandsons, Cody and Tyler; and two great-grandchildren, CJ and Luke. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Pamela Ann.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 558 W Walnut St, Lancaster, PA 17603. A viewing will take place at the church from 10:00 AM until the time of Mass. Burial will follow at St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery.
