Mary L. Glaab, 71

February 06, 2023

Mary Louise (Christensen) Glaab died peacefully at home with her family in Lititz, PA on Monday, February 6, at the age of 71 after a brave 10-month battle with pancreatic cancer.

Mary is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, James A. Glaab, Jr.; her three children, Steven Glaab (and Caroline Malloy) of Chicago, IL; Jennifer Glaab (and Anastasia Chuvala) of Chattanooga, TN; and William Glaab (and Courtney Apple) of Philadelphia, PA, and their daughters, Finley and Rue Glaab, her beloved granddaughters.

Having been adopted as an infant, it was not until later in life that Mary reunited with her biological family and is survived by her half-siblings, Gail Guenther and William Koller.

She is preceded in death by her parents, A. George and Louise Christensen of East Hanover, NJ, and by her biological parents.

Mary was born on July 20, 1951 in Newark, NJ. She was a proud graduate of St. Elizabeth’s Academy (1969), following in the footsteps of her beloved aunts, Janet & Elsie. Mary married the love of her life, Jim, on September 9,1972.

Mary and Jim raised their three children in Cedar Knolls, NJ and Greene, NY. In Greene, Mary was an essential part of the community as an entrepreneur establishing The Kids Room, a children’s clothing consignment store, in 1985. Mary was the sole proprietor and operator of her local business for over 20 years before retiring to Gordonsville, VA. Recently Mary & Jim relocated to Lititz, PA to be closer to their adored granddaughters.

In her retirement, Mary found a new passion in genealogy, inspired by her search for her biological parents. She eventually traced countless family histories, building family trees generations deep that she was always proud to share.

Mary was beloved by so many friends and family members and will be remembered, especially by her children, as a loving, caring, and most generous soul. Her heart will forever be connected to her granddaughters’ through their shared invisible string. To her husband, Jim, she was his entire universe and will be missed every day of his life.

Family and friends will be received from 2-4pm on Sunday, February 12, 2023. A Memorial Service will be held at 11AM on Monday, February 13 at 11am at Spacht Snyder Funeral Home, 127 S. Broad Street, Lititz, PA. Family and friends will be received from 10AM until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, please donate to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to defeat childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. The Glaab family thanks Dr. Tracy DeGreen and the nurses and staff of both Lancaster Cancer Center and Hospice & Community Care of Lancaster,PA.

As a former customer and client at Mary’s store in Greene, I can still envision her, sttanding behind the counter.  I can also see that large smile and her great laugh.  Over the years it was always very apparent how much Mary’s family meant to her as she frequently talked about her children as well as her hopes to be a grandmother someday.  One distinct memory I have, from the same year she was closing her store, was when Mary shared how she had found her biological mother but was too late to meet her.  While my heart panged for her, I could tell how much it all meant to her and she was still content.  I am not surprised that geneology played such a huge part in her retirement! Mary and I usually touched base, via email, around the first of the year.  The last several she would be beam with pride, talking about her granddaughters. Jim, we were so sorry to hear about Mary’s passing and are sending our condolences to you and your family. ~Larry & Shiela Walker

May27,2006 I was at my lowest having lost my dear mom Dolores Christopher Koller when an angel on earth reached out to me. This angel was Mary. As difficult of a time it was for me Mary’s compassion, love, understanding and joy filled my heart. Her love for family, friends, and life is a true testament of her character. Mary will forever live on in the hearts of her beautiful granddaughters and all the lives that she has touched .
I am truly blessed and honored to have Mary as my sister.
Love you, Gail

I have many fond memories of Mary (Mrs. Glaab to me) growing up with Bill in Greene. She was extremely kind and had a great laugh. I will always remember the trip to Ocean City with the Glaab family for summer vacation in 10th grade. We had an absolute blast and there were lots of laughs and stories that Bill and I still cherish. My heart breaks that she is gone, but she is certainly not forgotten. My family will keep you all in our thoughts and prayers and are very sorry for your loss.

Mary learned late in life – as an adopted daughter – that she had oodles of Germanna cousins through biological inheritance. Never too late! On April 26 last year, she wrote to me “please keep my family and myself in your prayers as I have just been diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer.” I wrote back to her “God bless you, Mary! I certainly will! My old boss, Congressman Mark Souder, also has pancreatic cancer. Can you pray for him, too? The peace of Christ be with you, cousin Mary!” Both are now in Heaven.

Easily one of the kindest, sweetest people I have ever had the privilege to know. Both she and Jim will forever be in my heart. It was and always will be my great honor to have been their neighbors and friends for so many years. My deepest condolances to Jim. You married and lived your life with a wonderful person, as did she.

I was lucky enough to know Mary since our children entered Kindergarten at Salem Drive School in Hanover Township.  My daughter Jessica became good friends with both Steven and Jenny.
Mary was always such a warm and friendly person that you immediately wanted to be with her. Her smile would light up the room and her love of her family was inspirational.
Jennifer joined our Girl Scout troop as a Daisy scout and Mary was always there to assist us in any way.
I always loved her and her entire family. The love emanated from each and everyone of them. Mary was the driving force for love and compassion.
I was devastated when she called me in May with the news of her cancer. Even this news she accepted with an understanding that amazed me.
God bless her and may she rest in peace. The world has lost an angel on earth.

I have many wonderful memories of Mary from our time together at St. Elizabeth. I can see in my mind’s eye her beautiful smile and big laugh.  We spent those high school years learning but also roaming the halls, exploring the campus, and, ocassionally, getting into mischief. She will be sorely missed by those of us who shared those years with her.
I will hold the entire Glaab family in my thoughts and prayers.
