Mary Anne Riger

November 19, 2018

Mary Anne Riger passed away peacefully in Lancaster, PA, on November 19, 2018, surrounded by family at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Cass and Bob Jendzurski. Affectionately known to family and friends as Anne, she was born in Denver, CO, on May 30, 1928, and was the daughter of the late Hugh A. and Anora Akolt Stewart. Anne was the loving wife of the late Lt. Cmdr. Robert J. Riger, USN, a graduate of the US Naval Academy’s class of 1949. Anne’s greatest joy and purpose in life was being a mother to her five children, Cass, Charlie, Betsy, John, and Hugh. Anne was blessed with 10 grandchildren and 18 greatgrandchildren. She will love them forever.
Anne graduated St. Mary’s Academy in Denver in 1946, and attended Loretto Heights College and University of Denver, where she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta. An accomplished dog breeder, Anne established Folly Barn Farms Kennel in Gatesburg, PA, where she raised a national champion Saint Bernard. Anne was an expert seamstress and, as the owner and operator of Hollow Bottom Bears, produced beautiful handmade decorative vacuum cleaner covers that she sold across the country. Anne was a collector of teddy bears, Santa Clauses, and miniature dollhouses, and was an avid reader. Anne loved her country and was an outstanding citizen exemplifying the finest virtues of American life.
The family is very grateful to Caring Hospice Services for their outstanding care and compassion.
Friends are invited to attend a viewing on Monday, November 26, 2018 from 10-11 AM at Saint Richard’s Catholic Church, 110 North Oak St., Manheim, PA, followed by the funeral Mass at 11AM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Anne’s name may be made to Songs for Journey, 2437 Fruitville Pike, Lancaster, PA 17601 or to Gamma Phi Beta at www.gammaphibeta.org.

To the family of Mary Anne Riger, I am so deeply sorry for your loss. I have so many wonderful memories of Mary Anne from the many times I spent with your family after you moved into my grandfathers farm house. Your entire family brought me so much joy. Especially Mary Anne, she welcomed me in like I was one of her children. I will forever remember her big beautiful smile. May your cherished memories ease the pain of your loss. Much hugs & love to all of you. Sincerely, Debbie Espenschied.

To the children of Anne Riger: My name is Janet Akolt Daily, daughter of Jack Akolt, who was the son of John Akolt. (One of his sisters was Nora Akolt Stewart). I believe that my father and Anne Riger were first cousins. If so, I’d like you to know that my father was very fond of your mother. Her name stuck in my mind, as from time to time, he would mention her with much praise and respect. I also think that I and another cousin, Kathy Stewart, were little flower girls in your mother’s wedding. Somewhere I have a picture. Should I every find it again, I would be glad to forward you a copy. Your mother sounded indomitable, and I’m sorry for your loss.

It was my pleasure and joy to assist Anne while still in her apartment at PVRC.  Her smile brightened any place she was! She lived life to the full.  🙂
