Margaret Steck Jakway
October 27, 2013
Margaret Steck Jakway slipped away on Oct. 27, 2013 after complications from bladder cancer at the Mt. Joy Hospice Center in Mt. Joy, PA. Born in Camden, NJ in 1924, she was daughter of the late Malcolm M. Steck, Sr. and the late Sarah (Graham) Steck. She celebrated 57 years of marriage to her beloved husband, Edward M. Jakway, before his passing in 2008. She was devoted to and took such loving care of Ed during the last years of his life.
Margaret divided her time between her home in Lancaster, PA and her cabin in Long Lake, NY in the Adirondacks that she built with Ed over 30 years ago.
Margaret graduated from Rutgers University with a degree in Sociology. She was active in the League of Women Voters while residing in West Caldwell, NJ. As a newlywed, she worked for RCA in Camden, NJ as an interviewer in the Human Resources department. Margaret was a true renaissance woman with many interests including gardening, history, opera, fine arts, travel, cooking, weaving, hiking and playing her violin. She was equally happy sitting in the orchestra section of the Metropolitan Opera and on her deck at her cabin in the Adirondacks.
Margaret will be greatly missed by her sister, Mary Steck Weiford, of Riverton, NJ; her sister, Sarah Steck Rogers and her husband, George, of Arlington, MA; her brother, Malcolm M. Steck, Jr. and his wife, Trudi, of Palmyra, VA; and her brother, Duncan G. Steck of Lancaster, PA.
Her loss is profoundly felt by her loving nieces and nephews: Caleb C. Rogers, Leslie Weiford Wise, Mary M. Rogers, Julia Weiford Umbehauer, Sara Weiford Palladino, Richard P. Weiford, Jr., Susan E. Steck, Kenneth L. Steck, Erika S. Steck and Tania Steck Hineline and their families. Margaret’s nieces and nephews will miss her warmth, spirit, generosity, her ability to make each one feel special and in sharing her passions with us. We had so much more to learn from her.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks for the loving care provided to Margaret by the Mt. Joy Hospice Center. She was blessed to spend her final days in their tender care. If you wish to remember Margaret, memorial donations may be made in her memory to Hospice and Community Care, 685 Good Drive, Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125. www.hospiceandcommunitycare.org
A memorial service will be planned at a later time.
