Malcolm “Mac” Timothy Rayne

Malcolm “Mac” Timothy Rayne, age 77, of Kennett Square, PA, died Tuesday, August 7, 2018. He was the husband of Caroline “Cammye” Mills Rayne, with whom he shared 37 years of marriage. Born in West Chester, he was the son of the late Howard Timothy and Catharine Dare Rayne and the Grandson of Malcolm Farquhar and Catharine Farquhar.

Mac served our country as a Sergeant in the Army Reserves. He was a 1959 graduate of Kennett High School, attended Fishburne Military School and then received his college degree from the University of Delaware.

For 29 years, Mac was a beloved 5th grade teacher at Greenwood Elementary School in Kennett Township. Countless students rank him as their “favorite teacher ever” and all remember how he brought science to life with his hands-on experiments and made math fun with games and prizes. His students will also recall that every recess he would organize and play in a game of football or kickball.

Mac and Cammye also enjoyed a long 27 year career in the photography business. Their business, “The Outdoor Studio”, provided photography for all of life’s special events for many area families. Mac was also gifted in capturing nature in his images. He was named “Best Photographer” in Delaware multiple years and earned the Degree of Master of Photography from the Professional Photographers of America. For over a decade, he ran the Photography Club at Crosslands Community and organized and judged an annual Photography Scavenger Hunt in which he gave the group a list of words or phrases and let them create images to match.

Mac also loved to play tennis and golf, but most of all, he was a family man who simply enjoyed time with his family which included his beloved dachshund dogs, most recently Bubba Gump.

In addition to his wife Cammye, he is survived by three sons, Timothy Rayne (Amee) of Kennett Square, Stephen Rayne (Lisa) of New London, and Stanley Wilcox (Kim) of Kennett Square; one daughter, Lisa Diehl (Daniel) of Birmingham AL; one sister, Katharine Dare Gregory of Kennett Square; seven grandchildren, Sierra, Mac, Joshua, Matthew, Nathan, Alina and Danielle; two cousins, Patty Meyer of ME and Richard Thompson of CA; two nephews Peter Gray (Jill) of Kennett Square and David Gray (Alyssa) of North Carolina and one niece Lisa McManus (Jim) of Kennett Square.

You are invited to visit with Mac’s family and friends from 9-11AM Saturday morning August 18, 2018, at Greenwood Elementary School, 420 Greenwood Rd, Kennett Square, PA 19348. A memorial meeting for worship will follow at 11AM at the school. Interment will be held privately. Contributions in his memory may be made to Tick Tock Early Learning Center, 1694 Baltimore Pike, Avondale, PA 19311 or to Neighborhood Hospice 795 E. Marshall St. Suite 204 West Chester PA 19380.

Mac was a wonderful , teacher , teammate and friend. He was a kind, thoughtful mentor to me , Kathleen Dolan, Susan Kretzler, and our 6th grade team thrust upon Greenwood in the 90’s. At least he got a brand new wing and classroom out of it . ??

He was only one of 3 male teachers at Greenwood when I was there ( with his buddy John Davis & Bill Hicks). Mac had this calm sweet effect on all of us that we loved. He shared ideas with us as well as his enthuiasm and expertise. He had a way of motivating the kids with fun engaging activities, but still had full control and the respect of students and teachers alike.
Though too soon for him to leave this world, He leaves behind an amazing legacy making an incredible impact on hundreds of students and many teachers and staff.

Unfortunately, a minor surgery will prevent me from celebrating Mac at Greenwood, but Mac and family in my thoughts.

I am deeply saddened to learn of Mac’s passing. He was young in the Kendal/Crosslands community (where I now live). He was young, period! His enthusiasm for life was shared without apology with his family, his students, his friends, his colleagues, and to all who knew him. His photography brought LIFE to life. Mac truly made a wonderful difference in the lives of everyone he touched. He will be greatly missed, but his wonderful legacy will live on for generations to come. I’m sorry that I cannot be with everyone on Saturday, August 18. Please know that my deepest sympathy and prayers are with you all. May God give you comfort and peace.

Mr. Rayne was my favorite teacher ever. Just like you said. I’ll never forget his 5th grade class. At the end of the year we made “inventions” and he taped our demonstrations and showed them at open house. I used his idea for 4-6th grade STEM class I taught 2 years ago. And that was just one of his many creative ideas! He was a wonderful guy. I’m so sorry for your loss.

Something Mac taught me was to listen and observe people. He told me “you can learn a lot about people just by watching them.” So sorry to hear of the loss of this great man. Love you all.
