Lila Jane Echterling, 87

March 30, 2013

Lila Jane (Stauffer) Echterling, 87, of Lititz, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 30, 2013 at Luther Acres, Lititz with her family by her side.

Born in Lancaster, she was the wife of the late Joseph George "Dodie" Echterling, to whom she was married 46 years. She was the daughter of the late Earl Christian and Marguerite (Hertzler) Stauffer.

Lila attended Lititz High School and graduated from Manheim Township High School and was proud to be a captain of the field hockey and basketball teams, as well as a cheerleader at LHS. She was a wife, homemaker and mother to two daughters, of whom she was immensely proud.

In her younger years, Lila was active in several women’s bowling leagues and enjoyed playing cards with her friends. She and her husband were members of the Razzmatazz Club, where they loved to jitterbug. An accomplished artist and seamstress, she was very talented in many crafts, especially quilts and oil paintings. She was famous for her chocolate cake, known as "Lila’s Slop Cake", and looked forward to opening day every year to cheer on her Phillies.

She was of the Lutheran faith.

She is survived by two daughters whom she loved dearly: Susan C. Echterling, MD and her partner Jean Ann Vawter of Mooresville, NC; and Jane E. Echterling , PhD of Gainesville, FL; many nieces and nephews, whose visits always gave her joy, and her dear friends, Larry and Mary Ann Herr, who have been by her side for many years.

Memorial services will be held at 11 AM Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Inurnment at St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery will be announced at a later date. Because Lila loved animals, memorial contributions in her memory may be made to Humane League of Lancaster County, 2195 Lincoln Highway E., Lancaster, PA 17602 or to Hospice & Community Care, 685 Good Drive, PO Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125. Jane and Susan, I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your mother. I have fond memories of both your parents while waiting for the school bus on their corner. They were both so very nice to us kids. I lived at 98 Summer Lane. On the corner in the brown and white tudor house across from the O’Connor’s. My dad still lives there but the O’Connor’s have since moved away.
