Joyce B. Cody, 75

Joyce B. Cody, 75, of 1629 Princess Anne Drive, Lancaster, died Wednesday, Nov. 15 at Lancaster General Hospital.  She had suffered a heart attack three days earlier.

Mrs. Cody was the wife of William H. Cody.  They would have celebrated 50 years of marriage on Dec. 29.

Born in Portsmouth, VA, she was the daughter of the late Leslie D. and Elizabeth Williams Bell.

A 1952 graduate of Westhampton College, University of Richmond, Mrs. Cody taught in elementary schools in Ohio, Virginia, and Pennsylvania.  She moved to Lancaster with her family in 1962 and for many years was a substitute teacher in the Conestoga Valley District Schools.

In the 1960s, Mrs. Cody served as president of the Lancaster County Young Democrats.  She was a member of First Baptist Church of Lancaster, where she was a Sunday school teacher for many years.  She was a founder of Grandma’s Story Hour at the church, a weekly program in which grandmother members of the church read to neighborhood youngsters and helped tutor them.

Mrs. Cody was a great supporter of the Eden Manor swim team.  She was credited with successfully working to gain entry for the team in the Lancaster County Summer Swim League.  In 1972, even though Tropical Storm Agnes caused heavy damage to the Eden Manor pool sweeping away the team’s starting blocks in the Conestoga River, she managed to get replacement equipment donated by other league teams.  The Eden Manor team was able to compete that year even though all its meets were away events.  She was honored for her efforts and continuing support of the Eden Manor team at a swim meet ceremony in 2002.

Besides her husband, she is survived by three sons, Stephen W., husband of Sharon Greelish Cody; David L., husband of Kathryn Frankhouser Cody; Douglas H., husband of Kelly Caulwell Cody; a daughter, Susan E., wife of Richard Finnegan all of Lancaster; and eight grandchildren: Kaitlyn, Joshua, Laura, Nathan, Sarah, Matthew, Thomas and Christopher.  Also surviving is a brother, Leslie D. Bell Jr., husband of Eleanor, of Portsmouth, VA.

A funeral service will be held on Monday at the First Baptist Church of Lancaster, 612 N. Duke St., Lancaster, PA at 2p.m.  The interment will be private.  Relatives and friends may attend the viewing at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home Inc., 414 E. King St., Lancaster, PA on Sunday from 5:30-7:30p.m.  A viewing will be held at the church on Monday from 1p.m. until the time of service.  Please omit flowers.  Memorial contributions may be made in Joyce’s memory to the Joshua Fund at the First Baptist Church, 612 N.
