Joseph F. Burke, Sr., 93

July 01, 2018

Joseph F. Burke, Sr., 93, of East Hempfield Twp., passed away on Sunday, July 1, 2018, at Lancaster General Hospital. Born in Butler Linksys, Schuylkill County, he was the son of the late Joseph P. and Louise (Petritsch) Burke, and the beloved husband of Mary Louise (Bresnock) Burke, with whom he would have celebrated 70 years of marriage this coming October.

Joe enlisted in the US Army and honorably served his country during WWII. For many years, he worked in the production department for Kellogg’s Corp., and became a member of the Kellogg’s Retirement Club in 1988. He enjoyed socializing and traveling with the Guys & Dolls organization of St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church, and in his free time he liked gardening and wood working.

In addition to his wife Mary Louise, Joe is survived by three sons, Joseph F. Burke, Jr. and his wife Karen, John J. Burke and his wife Rhonda, and Jeffrey J. Burke and his wife Karen. Also surviving are five grandchildren, John J. Burke, Jr. and his wife Denise, Kris J. Smith and her husband Matt, Joseph F. Burke, III, Jeremy L. Burke and his wife Amanda, and Brian A. Burke and his wife Lindsey; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary Lou Adam and Rose Kern.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 7, 2018, at 10:30 AM at St. James Catholic Church, 505 Woodcrest Avenue, Lititz, PA, 17543, where a viewing will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 AM. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Fountain Springs. Memorial contributions in Joe’s memory may be offered to Paralyzed Veterans of America at www.pva.org

Condolences to the Family

July 05, 2018

Please accept my deepest sympathy.  I would truly like to attend visitation and express my thoughts in person on Saturday but it just so happens to be when my first grandchild (a little girl) is being baptized.  I thought the Granny ship sailed without me a long time ago but if I’ve learned anything over the years, it’s things happen God’s way in God’s time.  I’ve missed seeing you, Mrs. Burke, at Mass and seeing your husband’s name in the prayer list, I assumed he was not doing well at all.  I hope his death was peaceful.  Joe, how are you?  I buried both my parents and it is heartbreaking but we have to believe they are at a better place.  Your family now has another guardian angel watching over all of you.  Again, my deepest sympathy.  Rita Forster Snavely
