Jonathan Albert McDonald, 62

November 25, 2017

Jonathan Albert McDonald, of Millersville, known to some as “Superman”, took flight to his final resting place with his loving family and friends by his side on Saturday, November 25, 2017. He was born on Thursday, June 9, 1955, in Schenectady, NY to the late James E. McDonald and Barbara (Vines) McDonald.

Jon was a 1973 graduate of Penn Manor High School where he was the quarterback of the football team and would let you know that he had completed the first pass in Penn Manor High School history. He received a Bachelor’s degree from Millersville University where he was a brother in Alpha Sigma Chi fraternity. Jon started his own commercial roofing company in 1990 and most recently had been self employed in sales and marketing.

Jon committed his life to serving others. He was a member of the Lancaster Sertoma Club for over 20 years, where he was a self-proclaimed Czar of many things, but most notably the Sertoma Chicken Barbeque and the Mid Summer’s Night Dream car show in Long’s Park where he entered his classic cars. He was known in Sertoma for his “Top 10” lists, for better or worse. Jon was also a member of the Lancaster Rotary Club. He coached his daughters’ soccer and basketball teams for many years through the Lancaster Rec and LYSC and made many lifelong friends while coaching basketball for St. Leo the Great. Jon hosted his own summer basketball camp, “Camp Jonnie”, for his daughters and some of their teammates where he taught his signature behind the back shuffle and pass.

Jon loved woodworking and spent a lot of time improving his craft, working with his favorite exotic woods, then donating his platters, bowls, and wine racks to others. He was a born competitor who loved to play basketball, tennis, box, and lift weights in his younger days. He was a devoted son and spent many Thursday nights watching The Black List with his mother, “Maccy”, and participating in his Survivor and Dancing with the Stars pools with his friends. Jon was an animal lover and now has his Siberian Huskies in his loving arms in Heaven. Jon will be remembered for his sense of humor and ability to make light of any situation but also for the time and effort he put into making people feel loved and cared for in times of need. He will be missed by many but most of all by his 3 daughters who were as proud of their father as he was of them.

Jon’s memory will live on through those that he is survived by, including his 3 daughters, Kimberly McDonald-Flood, of Lancaster, Lisa McDonald Garcia, wife of Davon Garcia, both of Lancaster, Jamie McDonald, of Lancaster, his mother, Barbara McDonald, of Millersville, 3 brothers, 1 sister, and 5 grandchildren, Kameron Garcia, Braylen Garcia, Avery Garcia, Sophia Flood, and Brynn Flood.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11AM on Friday, December 1, 2017 at St. Philip the Apostle Church, 2111 Millersville Pike, Lancaster, PA 17603. Friends will be received from 10-11AM prior to the service. Following the service will be a luncheon from 12PM to 3PM at Conestoga Country Club, 1950 Stone Mill Rd, Lancaster, PA 17603. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jon’s honor to a cause that was close to his heart, the Manor Pride Gridiron Club, P.O. Box 184, Millersville, PA 17551, or click to donate online for the Bill Beck Scholarship Fund.

Condolences to the Family

So sorry to hear the news of your Father’s passing. I’ve known him since high school and always thought he looked like Andy Gibb, which became a long standing joke. Jon had an incredible sense of humor and made everything seem less important and the world was a better place with him in it. Rest in Peace Jon.

My deepest condolences to the McDonald family.  Jon was one of my customers in the early 90’s while I worked at Allied Building Products in Reading. It was a pleasure doing business with him.  I could tell he was a very good guy, but I didn’t know about all his community outreach until I read this obituary.  Ironically, a decade later I began, and still do work with Pam.  Small world.  Rest in Peace, Jon — Teddy Baer

I am sorry for your family’s loss. Jon and I were classmates at LT and reconnected a few years ago. I will remember his smile and sense of wit.  Peg Ellison Wolpert

Dad, I hope you know what a blessings the last 3 months were to us. I know you were in pain and sometimes didn’t want to give it your all but you never complained. Not once. Your sense of humor was in tact and I am forever grateful for the times that we shared, the laughs, you being stubborn, and for once, you letting us take the wheel. I hope we made you proud. I hope you felt safe and surrounded by love because you are still loved now as much as you ever were on earth. We protected you then and we will protect and cherish your memory now. The kids will always know their Ganfodder. We will make sure of that. Forever and ever, amen.
“Let me tell you a secret, about a fathers love.
A secret that my daddy said was just between us.I said daddies dont just love their children every now and thenIts a love without end, amen.”

Jonnie Mac.. You were one of a kind.  You kept things light and laughed at every oppertunity, even making jokes with the nurses when I saw you at LGH following your first stroke.  Optimistic for the recovery that unfortunately didn’t happen.  You were a big help for the Penn Manor Class reunions.  Thanks to you, I know what strawberry blond hair is.  I’ll miss you.  Don Thomas

So sorry to hear the news of Jon’s passing. He was my next door neighbor for a number of years when his family lived in Manheim Twp. We didn’t keep in touch after he moved years ago but I always remember his laugh and some fun times we had on Krieder ave. Stay strong Pam and kids.

I got to know Jon through Frank Black at Sertoma. As a fellow car show organizer I helped him set up the Longs Park event.  I have never met a guy with more energy, perseverance and attention to detail.  A great sense of humor and a friend to so many.  Such a loss to the community, truly a sad day.

I send my sincere condolences to Jon’s Mother and his family.  Jon was always fun to talk with, always had a smile for everyone  and had the best sense of humor.  I can only imagine the hole left in his family’s lives. I’m sure he will be with them in spirit during this difficult time.

In the best of times and the worst of times, you were there. I’m going to miss movie nights, margaritas and expensive salsa at El Serrano, Gemini birthday celebrations, but most of all I will miss the ordinary phone calls. I am a better person because I knew you. I am sad because I loved you. I am at peace because I know you are whole once again. Goodbye my friend.
