John C. Landis, 87

John C. Landis, 87, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July, 7, 2009, at Hospice of Lancaster County in Mount Joy with his daughters and dog at his side. He was preceded in death by Rosalie K. Landis his wife of 57 years.

Born in East Petersburg, Ted was a 1939 graduate of East Hempfield High school and looked forward to annual meetings with his fellow classmates. Ted served four years in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II as a chief yeoman and fought in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign. He regularly attended Frigate reunions with his fellow coast guardsmen. Ted had a 50 year career in the transportation industry starting with Lancaster Transportation, and later on Interstate Motor Freight and TransAmerican Freight Lines. Ted was a long time member of the Lancaster Traffic Club, a charter member of the Winross Collectors Club, and a lifetime member of the Elks. Ted enjoyed all sports especially baseball, football, golf and Nascar. Ted enjoyed traveling and after retiring he and Rose set out to visit all the capitals in the United States. They hit all but two…Juneau and Austin. They also traveled together to Ireland and visited Japan, China and Hong Kong in 1984.  They most enjoyed spending time with their daughters and grandson, David.

When, on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary, Ted was asked the secret of a successful marriage he responded: "There is no formula for our success. We just enjoy spending time together and we listened to each other. We were in love when we got married, and we still are."

Mr. Landis is survived by two daughters: Patricia A. Landis of Lancaster, and Susan M., wife of Peter G. Kopperman and mother of David Landis Kopperman of Maryland; two sisters: D. Mildred Kissinger, and Doris Flory both of Florida; Mr. Landis was preceded in death by two brothers: Kenneth G. Landis, and Elwood G. Landis; and two sisters: Kathryn Klase, and Betty Landis.
