I have been a friend of both John and Judy Mitchell since John and I were both Patent Examiners in the late 1960s and early 1970s in Arlington Virginia. Judy took oil painting lessons with my wife at the time. Everyone painted the same landscape scene at the same time; so everyone taking lessons from that artist at that time had paintings that were done of the same scenes. John worked as a Patent Attorney in our law firm’s Omaha Office before taking a job in Lancaster with New Holland. John and I kept in touch from time to time, mostly by e-mail. Had dinner with John and Judy in Lancaster a decade or so ago in Lancaster and they stayed overnight at our lake house in southern Iowa with us 5 years or so ago. I always really enjoyed John’s dry sense of humor. Both John and Judy were wonderful people and I feel blessed that I got to spend some of my life with them.

I met John around 1976 when he joined the Henderson & Strom patent firm in Omaha and I was a law student doing patent illustrations for the firm. He had enough faith (or forebearance) in me to permit me and encourage me to start writing patent applications under his mentorship. And that’s what I’ve been doing for the past 40 years. Thank you so much, John, for that kind push and assistance, and my sincere condolences to your family. Steve Parmelee
