Joan Robinson

Joan Robinson passed away on 12/24/2009 in Lititz Pa. She was born in Sheffield England and was the daughter of the late Bert and Edith Lawton. Joan was the wife of Norman A. Robinson who passed away in 2008. Joan was predeceased by her beloved sister Winifred who died in Vero Beach Fla.

Joan worked at the Tung-Sol Electric plant in Washington NJ and for many happy years at the Blue Army of Fatima shrine in Asbury NJ.

Joan had a full life that included being born in England, moving to the United States as a child and living with her father’s extended family in rural Warren PA. Just before the outbreak of WWII, Joan returned to England with her parents to visit her ailing grandmother. When the war broke out she was stranded but fate was kind and she met the love of her life Norman, with whom she shared a great married life of over sixty five years. She and Norman immigrated to the United States in 1955 with two sons, Ian and Keith, as well as with her parents, and her sister. With the help of her American cousins, Joan settled in Washington NJ and started a new life.  She had a son Craig who became the first American in her family.

She will always be remembered as a person who put her family first. She sacrificed so that others could benefit. Never one to lead, she could however be counted on to help once a path was taken. She was her husband’s and sons’ great support in family vacations and adventures no matter what.  Joan enjoyed not only her own children but lived long enough to be actively involved with both her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Going to a sporting event or play were always a highlight of her life and she proudly applauded all efforts.

Joan was a great lover of animals and befriended stray cats and dogs who sometimes became part of her household. She could not tolerate animal abuse or cruelty. As an example, when watching a movie involving horses charging about in a Western etc., she would remark that she hoped the horses were OK, and could have cared less about the riders. Despite never playing the sports, Joan watched and rooted for Penn State football and Purdue basketball, Yankee baseball and especially loved tennis.

Joan is survived by three sons. Ian and his wife Beverly of Pen Argyl PA, Keith and his wife Sandy of Mt. Bethel  PA, and Craig and his wife Regina of Lititz PA. She had seven grandchildren, Alan, Mark, Jill, Kyle, Nathaniel, Alexandra and Olivia. Joan was also blessed with six great grandchildren, Brooke, Drew, Zoey, Madison, Damian and Cameron. She will be greatly missed by all but her love and spirit will remain with her extended family and friends forever.

Joan’s family asks that contributions be made in her memory to the Humane League of Lancaster County, 2195 Lincoln Hwy. East, Lancaster, PA 17602 www.humaneleague.com Arrangements by the Charles F. What Memories I Have of Joan
The prettiest girl in Sheffield in the early forties, described at the time as a  Dizzy Dame with an effervescent personality. She spent the war years assembling timing devices for the war effort.
Norman had some initial difficulties in convincing her that they should be life partners but what a success the marriage has been.
As a Wife and Mother of three boys she supported Norman through the difficult times after the second world war in the U.K.,but prospects looked better abroad.
When the family moved to the U.S.A.their prospects changed and Joan with Norman established a great American family that we are all proud of.
Joan you are a credit to your Yorkshire roots and your American inheritance and we Yorkshire Limeys salute you.
Condolences to all.

John Robinson and Family.
Walsall,
England.

My deepest sympathy goes out to my cousins Ian, Keith and Craig, on the sad loss of their mother, who was my Aunt Joan.

It was a sad Christmas Eve when my Aunt Thelma Lawton called to inform me of Joan’s passing.

I have many fond memories of Aunt Joan and Uncle Norman especially the times our families spent at picnics along the Delaware and at family gatherings in the 50s, 60s and 70s.

My mother, Pearl of Clearwater, and my sister, Vicki of West Palm Beach, also sends their regrets on the news.

Cousin John Lawton, Tarpon Springs, Florida
