Joan M. Sherman, 84

Joan M. Sherman, 84, of Lancaster passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2020. Born in Harrisburg, PA she was the daughter of Helen and Dr. Lee Weinstein.
She attended Lesly College where she received her BS degree in Education. In 1958, she earned a Master of Arts degree from Columbia University Teachers College. She taught at the Neff Elementary School until 1961 when her first child was due. Married to Dr. Beryl Sherman, she was very busy raising three boys, running a household and still finding time for religious activities.
In her early years, she was most active in the sisterhood of Temple Beth El. She served as chairman for programing, the fund card, bereavement and vice president and also served twice as the sisterhood president. Some of her favorite chairmanships were the Town Fair and Temple Membership which she served for seven years. Joan was also a life member of Hadassah.
Joan received honors as the Sisterhood Woman of the Year twice, and twice as the Congregant of the Year. In 2008, a Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Joan and her husband.
She was a longtime member of JCC and donated yearly to Longs Park and the Fulton Theater. Joan was asked to be the decorating chairperson for the new Temple Beth El on Rohrerstown Road. In 1975, she was very much engaged in the design and decorating of the remodeled Temple Beth El on Lime Street.
Joan was a great mother and wife and she leaves behind her husband Beryl, and two sons, Dr. Craig Sherman of Scottsdale, AZ and Frederic “Fred” Sherman of Mt. Joy. She was preceded in death by her son, Harris who passed from Multiple Sclerosis on October 15, 2003.
I want to thank all the wonderful people who helped make my life as fruitful as it was and as beautiful as it was. I wish you all the good things that life can bring and a fond farewell.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Funeral Service on Sunday, February 23, 2020 at 10AM at the Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA. Interment will take place in Degel Israel Cemetery. Contributions in Joan’s memory may be made to Temple Beth El, 1836 Rohrerstown Rd, Lancaster, PA 17601, Degel Israel Synagogue, 1120 Columbia Ave, Lancaster, PA 17603, or Jewish Family Services, 75 E. James St, Lancaster, PA 17602.
