Jerry Heavner, 44

Jerry Heavner, 44, went home to be with his father, Frank, in Heaven on Wednesday, April 30th, 2008 at Lancaster General Hospital.  He was born in Bellefonte Hospital in Centre County, PA  and was the beloved son of Jane L. Heavner of Lititz, and Frank R. Heavner III (deceased.)

Jerry survived brain cancer for 35 years.  Despite his disabilities from this, his humor and positive spirit always touched everyone who met him.  He was a fan of the Steelers and Pirates his entire life, and an avid baseball card, stamp and coin collector.  He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church for 30 years, and was very devout and vocal in his faith.

Surviving in addition to his mother are 2 brothers, Frank Heavner husband of Nancy, and Fred Heavner husband of Shannon; also several nieces and nephews.  He was a very loving son and the greatest brother.

For the last 4 years, he resided at Acadia Brain Injury Rehab Facility of Greenfield Corporate Center, and benefited greatly from their program.

Friends and family are invited to attend Jerry’s Memorial Service on Saturday, May 3rd at 2PM at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home and Chapel, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in Jerry’s memory be made to the Lancaster General Health Care Foundation, Memo: Brain Tumor Community Group, Box 3555 Lancaster, PA 17604 and Hospice of Lancaster County, 685 Good Dr., Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125.

Hi Jane:

We are so sad at the passing of Jerry. Our girls have missed seeing him since
you moved to another place in Lititz. We think of you so often. He touched our
girls lives and they remember taking walks with him, his fiesty spirit and just the dear friend he was to them. They always watched to see when Jerry came ‘home’to Woodcrest Ave house. He touched their lives deeply, and even though its been a few years, they still ask and recall the times with him. We alwasy admired the work and time you put into getting him quality care–what a mom you are–it is a blessing to him to have you as a mom all these years–you are sweet lady!!!
We’re so sorry for his passing and i’m sure this will leave an empty space in your heart without him. We’ll pray for you as you move on without him here on earth and that you can find peace. Your friends  the Bill Slater Family

My maiden name is Gina Gargano. I remember Jerry when I used to go swimming as a young girl at the Millersville Pool. I think I went to elementary school with him also. I remember when he first got ill. I wish I could have known the amazing person he was. My thoughts and prayers are with your family. God Bless.

My deepest sympathy at the passing of your son.

Bobbie Miller, SGIP

Dear Heavner Family,

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this time of sorrow. Jerry was a wonderful sprit who always brought a smile to my face. I will miss our sessions together greatly. His friendly nature has had a huge impact on all of us at Acadia. It was a pleasure having known him.

Dear Jane,

So sorry to read of Jerry’s death in the paper.

I had good intentions to be at his memorial service today but I got kinda goofed up in my directions and ended going the wrong way on 501.

I have good memories of Jerry when we came to brain tumor support group.  He always seemed happy and had a smile to give everybody.

Please except my sympathy!  He’s in perfect health now, something that he hasn’t experienced for a long time.

Love,
Betty McGee

I had the pleasure of working with Jerry in Speech Therapy for the last several years.  His determination and positive outlook have always inspired me.  There were two phrases that we would practice at the begining of each session…..red leather, yellow leather…..and, unique New York. Jerry would practice these until he could make each sound and movement as clear as possible.  He would often say, "unique you nork" instead of unique New York and we would both laugh and laugh as he would continue to try.

Jerry was an extraordinary man and I will always remember him and draw strength from his unwavering faith.

I can only hope that I can be as wonderful of a mother to my children as Jane has been, and thank goodness for Fred and his family who brought so much joy to Jerry as well.

With much admiration,

Laura McKelvie

Jerry always impressed me as a very unique and delightful person.  He was both fantastically silly and amazingly deep.  He was curious, honest, and had one of the most deepest faiths I have ever known.  His love of his family was tremendous.  I will miss him very much in my groups, as he brought such a unique and wonderful perspective that was so helpful to others, including me.  Although I’m sad he was sick, I’m glad he passed through Acadia and that I was able to know him.  He will be missed.

Dear Jane, Fred & Frank,

I’m so sorry about Jerry.

I’m sorry, too, that I cannot be there to share in Jerry’s Service.

I learned only recently, that Jerry was an avid Steelers and Pirates fan, as my son Mark was also a fan, and I gave away his mementoes just last year when I moved to Willow Valley.

Jerry will be sorely missed on Saturday evenings at Redeemer.

Sincerely, Mary Choplosky
