Jeffrey Glenn Sweigart, 72

July 09, 2025

Jeffrey Glenn Sweigart, 72, of Lancaster passed away at home peacefully on Wednesday July 9, 2025. Although Jeff had been battling health issues in recent months, his death was unexpected.

Jeff was born in Lancaster on February 16, 1953, to the late Calvin Sweigart and Geraldine (Shertzer) Sweigart. He is survived by his son, Chad Jeffrey Sweigart, of Shavertown and his daughter, Amanda “Mandy” Lynn Sweigart-Quinn, of Millersville. Jeff was thankful to have Caelie McCormick Sweigart of Wilkes Barre for his daughter-in-law and Nathan K. Quinn of Kewanee, IL for his son-in-law. He absolutely loved and adored his granddaughter, Carrigan, and grandson, Cael, and had a soft spot in his heart for his cavapoo grandpup, PQ.

Jeff graduated from Hempfield High School in 1971. During his high school years, he was on the baseball, tennis and wrestling teams. At that time, Jeff developed an interest in road construction. While he started off as the kid mowing lawns around McMinn’s Asphalt Co., Inc., throughout the years, Jeff proved himself to be a capable and hard worker at McMinn’s. In 1984, Jeff became the sole owner of McMinn’s, which he eventually sold in 2007 to Olde Castle Materials/Pennsy Supply. He continued working for Pennsy until his retirement in 2020. Jeff loved road construction. He often said, “Every day I get to play in a giant sandbox.” Jeff cared deeply about the wellbeing of everyone who worked at McMinn’s. McMinn’s success, as Jeff well knew, would not have been possible without the sacrifice of the many dedicated employees that worked for the company.

From the time Jeff was little, he was an avid sports lover. Jeff would talk baseball, football, basketball, and hockey to anyone who was willing to chat. Nearest to Jeff’s heart were the Philadelphia Phillies, Eagles, and Flyers, the Penn State Nittany Lions, the Hershey Bears, and, later in life, the Tampa Bay Lightning, Rays, and Buccaneers. Jeff enjoyed experiencing sporting events in person with countless friends and family members over the last five decades. One sport Jeff was never fond of in his younger years was soccer. Yet, over the past few years of his life, Jeff softened to the “Beautiful Game” as he spent countless hours watching his grandchildren take the pitch. Jeff had a passion for youth sports, in particular baseball and softball. He believed that all children should have the opportunity to play ball on adequate fields with adequate equipment.

A celebration of Jeff’s life will be held on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at Charles F. Snyder, Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., with the service to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Jeff’s name to a charitable organization close to your heart.

Chad
I just heard about your dad’s passing.  I obviously have a lot of great memories from when we were kids growing up.  Your dad was so generous and made my experience playing little league travel baseball unforgettable.  Whether it was giving out signed autograph baseballs to the all stars and players of the game (I still have all of them by the way!) or arranging for hitting lessons at his house, he made everything special for us.  I’ll also never forget the tickets he gave me to the fan fest in Philly, and flying to Pittsburgh to see the Pirates.  Now that my son is playing baseball I often think of the amazing experiences we had and it would not have happened without him.  My condolences to you and the family.   Brin Freund

I was honored to know Jeff over several years as his Pastor. He was truly a man redeemed by grace in his love and generous heart for people. He helped more people than anyone will ever know. There are those angels in life who seem to make everyone feel special just being around them. Jeff was this kind of man; humble, unassuming and grateful. He made the world a better place, wherever he walked. May God bless his family and all who have been touched by this wonderful man. Rev. Dr. Sharon Barley

I met J.G.in Tim’s Gym. We became good friends. I carpeted his home and his offices. I had to leave the gym because of financial issues. I asked him for a job and there was no hesitation, when do you want to start? We’d always laugh together. I quit twice asked to come back and again no hesitation. The final time he called me to come back. It was easy for me to get him to laugh. I always called him J.G. I’m very sorry for your loss, may comfort and safety remain with all of you. BLErb

Mr. Sweigart was a part of my life that I talked about almost every year. Not only was he an amazing person, but he was a really good coach and motivated us to play baseball in ways. Unconventional these days. Sometimes it was to swim in the pool for a win or a whole box of baseball cards. He opened up his house to us and always encouraged us to use his batting cage.
He taught us a lot about baseball but he always threw his life experiences in.

While he will be missed, he will not be forgotten.  Christopher Pisano

Chad and Mandy
Your father left an incredible place in my heart and with my family.  Having the joy of meeting and becoming friends with your dad was a privelage.  What began as an incredible connetion with the Hershey Bears and Teddy Bear Toss, quickly grew well beyond the walls of the GIANT Center.  Jeff took the time to meet our son, share his love of the Phillie’s, and connect with laughs and incredible memories.  I always felt fortunate in learning from Jeff, hearing his sports travel stories, and wathcing his face light up in the tunnel on Teddy Bear Toss nights.  He always had a strong quiet confidence that drew me in.  I pray for you both, your family, and your children who clearly were a love of his life.  So sorry for your loss and prayers to you both and your family. My name is Craig Crockett. Jeff’s mother and my mother were sisters. We all lived under the same roof in the mid sixties in Salunga for a short time. He truly was the closest person to being a big brother that I ever had. He was five years older than me so we didn’t hang around much as kids but he did introduce me to Perry Chambers. Perry’s older brother Henry was one of Jeff’s best friends.  Jeff taught me what he could about football and showed me how to take a hit. Jeff enjoyed music and shared that Jethro Tull’s Thick as a Brick was one of his favorites growing up. He never drank soda as his mom discouraged it. Jeff was absolutely the most generous man I have ever known.  For his friends he took care of all of us never allowing anyone to pick up a tab. Sports games baseball football and hockey all out of his pockets. The biggest generosity that I am aware of is he donated 400,000.00 USD to the Hershey Bears Teddy Bear toss over a ten year period. For every teddy bear counted he donated a specific amount. I am sure he made many more donations to strangers that we are all not aware of. He will be loved and missed by so many people. We can all learn by the fine examples in life that he set. He set the bar high for any and all to follow. Although we will all miss him, he has lived his life to the fullest. PAX et LVX  my friend. I will see you on the other side.  Craig Crockett

Chad and Mandy –
Deepest condolences from the Sassaman family and the Manheim Township baseball family … your father’s philanthropy in Lancaster County, gifting baseball field improvements at Manheim Township High School, the School District of Lancaster, and Stumpf Field is unmatched.  His volunteer service on the MTBSA and MT Dugout Club boards was for the betterment of baseball and softball players in our community and were always appreciated.  Your father’s lasting thumbprint is all over Lancaster County and will forever be cherished and remembered.  Jeff Sweigart made a difference!
With sympathy – Bill Sassaman

Truly one of a kind.Got to know Jeff at Tim’s gym in the early 2000’s. Shared his beach house and condo with my parents when my Mom was going through Chemo treatments. It meant the world to her and helped her get through the treatments. He was the most generous person that I have ever met. Rest in peace Jeff.

Mandy & Chad,
John and I are so very sorry to hear about your dad, he was an absolute great guy. He was no nonsense no BS. You always knew where you stood with him and if you weren’t sure I’d let you know it. He was a wonderful boss over the years. John enjoyed working for him very much, and the camaraderie that went along with the job he always had time to say hello. Whenever we would see him in the trucks after we had moved on, he was a wonderful person and all the good he did for all the charities. May he rest in peace, and maybe some of those fond memories will comfort you in your worst time of grief, many blessings to you and your families.

Chad and Mandy,  I am so sorry about the loss of your Dad. I have known Jeff since he was in high school and worked part time at Mc Minns. He and I talked for many hours about sports since Jeff and I were former jocks. He was the most generous and down to earth person that I have known. He loved his family deeply and was very proud of both of you. He loved the Phillies and enjoyed going down to some games with Jeff. Both of us liked to leave the game after the seventh inning to beat the traffic and get back to Lancaster.
Jeff was one of the Best!
Rest in Peace Jeff.

It was quite a surprise to read Jeff had passed away! With my many years working for Lancaster Township, working with Jeff was pure pleasure, a down to earth working man’s boss! We had several contracts with McMinns for road construction and it was always mostly handled by Jeff himself! I will keep Jeff and his family in my prayers!

Hi Chad and Mandy, sorry to hear about the passing of your father. Jeff was a trendsetter in the road construction business and set the bar high while running Mcminn’s. He took a good company and made it a great company and will forever be remembered and respected by everyone in the road  construction business in Lancaster county and beyond.I  personally will always remember Jeff for his  fiery determination to be the best he could be no matter what he was involved in. Failure was never an option in his life and he certainly lived his life to the fullest. I think he was an inspiration to many people and I will always be grateful to him  for all he did for me. God bless you Jeff!

I met Jeff at the baseball card shop over by Jay’s grocery store.  This was mid 1990’s.  My son and daughter and I were at the shop and Jeff bought my son $10 worth of cards!  Just out of the goodness of his heart.  My son was so surprised.  Needless to say, we had a conversation on the way home about making choices.  You can choose to be mean and nasty or good and kindhearted.  To this very day, my son remembers Jeff and that day with fond memories.  Sounds like he had an amazing life.  So sorry you had to lose him at such a young age.  Debbie Ditzler with David and Maddie Ditzler

July 17, 2025

During the couple of years that I and my brothers and Jeff all lived together with our moms and mutual grandparents in Salunga, I thought of him as a big brother. He loved the Beach Boys and had me type up his personal Top 40 hits lists. Before that, he lived in Las Vegas for a couple of years and was a paperboy. One of his customers was Wayne Newton. In recent years, he shared his beach house with me and my family, and we are still using furniture that he gave us. He was very generous in yearly donations to the Hershey Bears’ Teddy Bear Toss and I’m sure many other great causes. He was very good at making people feel special and tried to make the world a better place. Many blessings to his family. Cynthia Molkenthin
