James Stanford Hume, 74, died on July 7, 2015, in Mount Joy, PA. Mr. Hume was born on February 5, 1941, in Pasadena, California. He was the son of a military doctor and traveled extensively as a child, living in such places as Japan and Brazil. After 22 years of military service, Mr. Hume served in the Thornburgh administration as an appointed Director of Finance. He then became a professor of Mathematics at Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC). During his 15 years living in Lancaster, he devoted free time to helping first offender teens in a special program to help turn their lives around. He was an avid golfer, scuba diver, pilot, an expert investor, and a first class home chef.

Mr. Hume is survived by his wife of 15 years, Michele Polinitz. He is also survived by two children by his first marriage to Claudia Barclay: Samuel Hume, husband of Kathleen, of South Coventry, PA, and Christine Hume, partner of Jeff Clark, of Ypsilanti, MI. Condolences to the Family

July 16, 2015

To Michelle and Jim’s Family:
We enjoyed many years of close friendship with Jim and Michelle and will keep the memories of those times in our hearts.  We were welcomed into their home at Thanksgiving like family and were grateful for the opportunity to meet and get to know both families.  Jim was a kind and intelligent man with many talents.  We will miss him dearly and think of him always.  Our deepest condolences to Michelle and the entire family.  Linda Melusky and Robert Deitzel

Jim Hume was my colleague and fellow veteran.  His strong character, easy disposition, and dedication to education earned respect and admiration from all us at the college who had the honor of knowing him.  I got to see Jim about a year or so ago when he returned to wish retiring faculty well at a going away party.  It made me smile to see him again.  And it makes me smile now thinking of him.             Keep your head down Jim, and save me a place in the chow line.  Jerry Fernandes

Jim Hume attempted to teach me statistics. Unfortunately my mind couldn’t retain all of that knowledge. He was very patient and worked with me diligently. I passed in no small part to his efforts. I later graduated from HACC and continued to work at HACC. As a result I worked with Jim and found him to be just as patient and kind. I was saddened to hear of his passing. He will clearly be missed by many.

Dear Michele, Sam, and Christine…I’ve already been talking with Pat, but I wanted you to know how sorry I am over your loss. I haven’t met you all in person, but I met Jim and spent time with him at Dad and Pat’s, getting to know him a bit, and I know he was a wonderful man who will be very missed. I’m praying for you all, for comfort and joy in the memories you have of him.Blessings, Carmon
