James P. Argires, MD, 87

August 13, 2019

James P. Argires, MD, FACS, FAANS, 87, of Lancaster, PA — prominent neurosurgeon, philanthropist, and U.S. Marine — passed away on Tuesday, August 13th, 2019, surrounded by his family. He was the devoted husband of Anastasia “Tasia” (Koutroulakis) Argires, with whom he enjoyed 65 years of marriage.

Born in Lancaster to first-generation Greek immigrants Peter Z. Argires and Kacoula N. (Patmniou) Argires, Jimmy enlisted in the United States Marine Corps after graduating from J.P. McCaskey High School. He survived three major engagements of the Korean War — including the defense of the Pusan Perimeter, the landing at Incheon, and the Battle of Chosin Reservoir — earning a field promotion to Staff Sergeant as well as numerous combat medals.

Following his honorable discharge, Jimmy’s road to neurosurgery began with a BS in Physical Education and English from West Chester University, where an errant dodgeball pointed him toward higher callings. He simultaneously attended Birmingham Southern College and night school at the University of Alabama Birmingham, completed physical therapy training at the University of Pennsylvania, and ultimately earned a Medical Doctorate from the University of Alabama Medical School. He completed residencies at the University of Tennessee (neurology) and the University of Alabama (neurosurgery), the latter as Chief Resident under the late Dr. J. Garber Galbraith, once stitching Dr. Martin Luther King for a head injury sustained while preaching.

While licensed in both Alabama and Pennsylvania, Jimmy spent the bulk of his 60-year career serving the people of Lancaster. He began on Pearl St. in 1968 as an Associate in Practice with the late John L. Polcyn, MD. The pair went on to develop Lancaster NeuroScience & Spine Associates, where Jimmy flourished for almost 40 years as a physician and businessman. In 2008 he joined Brain Orthopedic Spine Specialists, and in his later years continued his practice with independent medical examinations.

Jimmy was a fixture at Lancaster General Hospital, where he served on the Board of Directors for 26 years, as chairman of the surgical department, and on 17 committees between 1979 and his death. He was instrumental in the campus’ growth, bringing the first radiosurgical gamma knife to Lancaster and helping to bring the first open MRI. He was also active at Lancaster Regional Medical Center, Ephrata Community Hospital, Community Hospital of Lancaster, HealthSouth Surgery Center, and Penn State Geisinger/Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

Jimmy held numerous academic posts at Lancaster General Hospital, Temple University, and Penn State University. He belonged to many national, state, and local medical societies, including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the North American Spine Society, the Mid-Atlantic Neurological Society (President Treasurer, 1985), the Pennsylvania Neurological Society (President, 1978-1979), the Pennsylvania Medical Society (Trauma Interspecialty Committee), and the Lancaster City and County Medical Society. He published on pituitary apoplexy in the Southern Medical Journal (1966) and served as Editor of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons’ newsletter (1979).

His many honors include the Outstanding Service Award from the American Trauma Society, the Distinguished Honor Award from Rotary International, induction into the Hall of Fame at West Chester University’s Sturzebecker Foundation, the Henry S. Wentz Award from Lancaster General Hospital, Distinguished Alumnus awards from both McCaskey High School and West Chester University, the naming of the Argires Science Complex at Millersville University, and his recent admission to the board of the National Korean War Veterans Association.

In the Lancaster community, Jimmy served on the directorial boards of Fulton Bank, Pennsylvania School of Art & Design, American Cancer Society-Lancaster, Cleft Palate Clinic, Lancaster Health Alliance, and Schreiber Pediatric Rehab. He served on the Millersville University Foundation Board, Franklin & Marshall University’s Advisory Board, and the Lancaster City Crime Commission Committee. He was also a lifetime member of the Boys & Girls Club, whose beneficiaries reminded him of his own childhood on the loading docks of Lancaster Newspapers, where he inserted sections of the paper for 25 cents per hour, or in the cheap seats of the Fulton Theater, where he spent many of his father’s work days.

A dedicated member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, Jimmy will be remembered as an exemplar of the Greek community. He was recognized as an Archon — the highest honor given to a lay person — by the Eastern Orthodox Church, and served 29 years on the Board of Trustees at Hellenic College and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. He recalled using his Greek language skills to pass medical exams, excelled at Greek dancing, and even met his wife through the Greek youth group GOYA.

In what personal time his life allowed, Jimmy was an avid tennis player, fisherman, hunter, and, later in life, bronze sculptor. He played with the Court Jesters tennis group at Lancaster Country Club for over 40 years, creating countless memories. He was also a lifelong, dedicated fan of the Alabama Crimson Tide football team, following the program’s every recruitment choice and watching, quite literally, every game.

He is survived by his wife Tasia; his children, Eugenia Argires, Kathleen Argires Pianka, wife of Robert, Perry Argires MD; and six grandchildren.

Funeral Services honoring the life of Dr. James P. Argires will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2019 at 10:30AM at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church 64 Hershey Avenue Lancaster, PA 17603 with the Rev. Hector Firoglanis, Rev. Alexander Veronis, and Rev. Alexander Goussetis officiating. Viewings will be on Friday from 4PM-8PM at the church with the Trisagion Service at 7PM and a second viewing will be on Saturday from 9AM-10:30AM prior to the service. Full military honors will accompany the interment at Conestoga Memorial Park. Memorial Contributions may be made in Jimmy’s memory to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church or The Boys & Girls Club of Lancaster PO BOX 104 Lancaster, PA 17608

Dear Tasia, Kathy, and all the Argires Family,
My deepest condolences on the sudden loss of Jimmy. I didn’t know Jimmy for a long time but during my time with him I got a sense of how special he was and how much he ment to the community and those close to him. His generosity with the Keystone Art Center allowed me to pursue one of my dreams of creating sculpture. Sculpting Jimmy’s portrait for Millersville University was a great honor for me and allowed me to get to know him better. Going for a drink with him and George after working in the studio was always a treat and felt like special occasion. He was an inspiration in his vitality, generosity, overall good nature, and was just fun to be around. He touched so many lives and will be missed by all.

Dear Tasia and family,
Over many years I got to know Jimmy and your entire family.  I seriously love you all….Jimmy, Tasia, Kathy and Perry and you families.   Please accept my deepest condolences for your loss.  There is nothing I can say to make the loss of Jimmy seam less.  He was a great man and touched more lives for the better then we all can imagine and in many cases saved their lives.  My life is truly enhanced knowing him.  My fondest memory was tailgating with him and your family for the Penn State – Alabama game in Tuscaloosa. Jimmy wanted all of us to go to the Yellow Parot and have the good luck drink for Alabama…there was no way I could say no….looking back we got crushed but I don’t think me having the drink made a difference…lol  That was a memory I will never forget.  I am sure my story is pail compared to all the increadible actions in surgery and all the lives he has saved.  I will miss him greatly.  He truly is one of the greatest men I have ever met.  My prayers and condolences are with you and your entire family.
Rest in peace Jimmy….

This dear man was so compassionate when I arrived in his office with debilitating back pain in January 1973. That was the first spine surgery. On March 1988, Dr Argires again performed relieving back surgery for me.  Then, in 2104 when I again arrived with severe back pain for the 4th time, Dr. Argires and his son determined that all I could do was take a steroid to relieve the pain. I will never forget the compassion and kindness I saw in Dr. Argires face. Then last year at the Greek Bazaar – there he was sitting at the head of the serving line. When I spoke to hime that dear gentlemen stood up to talk with me briefly. I waz honored!

To Tasia & the family of Jimmy.   I have some very wonderful memories of Dr. Argires when he worked at the University of Alabama Hospital in B-ham, Alabama in 1964.  I was a nurse who worked on the Neuro-surgery floor.  He was a wonderful Dr. and we were all blessed to have him in B-Ham!!  I had no idea he was from Penna.  That is where I was from…….I moved to B-Ham in 1964…. married my husband in that area and we have lived in ALabama for the past 53 years.  He lived a full life and will be greatly missed !!  Praying for your family as you find a “new normal” in life with out this very special person.

My condolences to the Argires family. I remember working with Dr Argires in CT at LGH. He was a tireless worker and he loved people. He was a truly compassionate person and always there. I mourn the loss of doctors who knew how to care for people without all the fancy machines we have today. He was skilled in the art of medicine. We will miss you Dr Argires; your courage and caring. My deepest sympathy to Tasia and the Family,
When I came back to Lancaster on Staff in 1981, Jimmy was the Chief of Surgery. We did many cases together in my early years, he decompressing the spinal canal and me performing a spine fusion. Over the years we referred many patients to each other and I was very fortunate to have his confidence, counsel, trust and friendship. He will be missed by his patients, staff and colleagues and remembered as one of the characters who molded the medical scene in Lancaster in the closing decades of the twentieth century
You will remain in my thoughts and prayers.

August 16, 2019

My deepest sympathy to the Argires family. I met Dr. Argires 20 years ago, fresh out of high school, when I worked for SPD in the OR. Always a story, a joke, a smile, a laugh. I didn’t feel I knew him well, yet it was like I had always known him. Reminding me of my own grandfather, we chatted about the Roll Tide and he often called me little Italy, as I’m part Italian and petite in stature.
He was a dedicated surgeon passionate about his craft. With high expectations, but in the humblest of ways. Always with an “attagirl”. I miss learning from docs like him. May he Rest In Peace. He will be missed personally and professionally. My deepest condolences to you. May your family find peace in his memories.

Dr. Argires, we will dearly miss you. Your contributions and impact push the limits of what one man can do in one life. This beautifully written obituary only captures some of his life’s work. His guidance for medical care across his countless patients, his support in the Millersville-Shanghai MBA exchange program, and even collaboration with neurosurgical centers in China. He’s touched many communities in Lancaster and beyond, including some of us Chinese-Americans. And lastly, your memory will live on, inspiring future physicians. You exemplified what it means to give back to one’s community.
With love, and wishing Tasia and his family all of our support,

To the Argires’ Family
My condolences for your loss of Doctor Argires,  a very wonderful doctor,
Doctor James P. Argires was only my doctor from 1976 to 1981.   And I am grateful and very thankful for what he did for me.   He saved my life when I was 22 at Lancaster General Hospital.  I was diagnosised by Doctor Argires with Epandamoma (cancerous tumor wrapped around my spinal cord and latched on to L1 to L3.   If it wasn’t for Doctor Argires and his associates I wouldn’t be here today.   He one doctor I always thought of every day of my life.  When Dr. Argires told my parents of his findings after my back surgery, he even had my father rushed to ER when my father collapsed from the news.    He was the best and a wonderful doctor I’ve ever had.   I loved him and I thanked God everyday for him and his medical knowledge.   I would always tell people all the time how great he was and he did not pull any punches.  He was straight forward and would tell you how it was and told you what needed to be done.
ive since moved to Southwest Louisiana from Pennsylvania.
Mrs. CarmenLita Fernandez-Deacon

To his family,
While I only know Dr. Argires as a customer in my short time seeing him while working as a bank teller with him many times over the course of the last 8 months, I can say, you lost a good man. Dr. Argires was always so kind and polite when coming in and always greeted us by name. He treated every single person in the branch with kindness and respect. Never once made a fuss and we were always so glad to have him in. I will miss him coming in and helping him paying his bills with us and he was so patient in every process we had done for him.

My deepest condolences,
Joshua Day

A great doctor to work with and he was always courteous to the workers helping him. I first saw him in the radiology dept. in the 1970’s. Great skills and rapport with patients. Always super busy and yet he had the energy for it all. A great loss to his family and the community.

Jimmy Argires operated on me ( 8 ) times, he did several spinals taps on me.

My days with Dr. Argires, fondly Jumping Jimmy, began at LGH back in the 70s. What a pleasure it was to work with him as a scrub technician. He brought us many joyful times in the OR.
In recent years it was fun to remember the old days in the OR with his father,  when working with Dr P. Argires and remembering when he would come to the hospital with his father.

It is a sad day in Lancaster’s Medical Community. A great man is gone, but not without leaving a great legacy and touching many lives.

With sadness and joy from the great memories
