James Joseph Gribble, 70
February 16, 2025
James Joseph Gribble, 70, of Strasburg, PA, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2025, after a brief illness.
Jim was the beloved husband of 46 years to Nancy Beth Hodder Gribble and a devoted father to his three children: Erica Dawn Gribble (Steve Rubach), Joanna Gribble Ross (Nathan Ross), and Scott Gribble. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Mason, Ally, Landon, Ellie, and Axl.
Jim is survived by his sisters- and brothers-in-law: Sue Hodder, Dan McMahon, Sally and Bart Darling, Jackie Gribble, and Joseph Pinto. He is also survived by his cherished nieces, nephews, and an army of dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Margaret Gribble, his brother Joseph Gribble, and his sister Patricia Pinto.
Born in Carbondale, PA, Jim attended Carbondale Area High School before settling in Strasburg, where he lived for over 45 years. He built a legacy through his business, James J. Gribble Masonry Construction, which he owned and operated for more than 40 years. A true craftsman, Jim took great pride in his work, leaving a lasting mark on the community. More recently, Jim worked at Chapman Ford of Lancaster. He always loved cars, especially Fords, and being part of the Chapman team meant the world to him.
Jim was an active and adventurous spirit. He found joy in riding his Harley and taking motorcycle trips across the country with his brother-in-law and son-in-law. They traveled to bike weeks in Sturgis, Daytona, Little Sturgis, DelMarVa, Gettysburg, Johnstown, among others. His favorite were the trips he took to his family’s cabin in Venango County, PA. While he rarely sat still when he was there, he loved working to make the cabin a nice place for generations to come.
In his younger years, Jim was an avid hunter and spent many years with his “cabin family” in Wayne County, PA. His weekends were often filled with watching football, spending time with his many friends, and plenty of laughter. Above all, he was a man who valued family, friendship, and a life well-lived.
The family sincerely thanks Dr. Kyper and the care team at Lancaster General Hospital 5th Floor ICU unit, especially Jason and Jon for their kindness and compassion.
Jim was loved dearly and will be missed endlessly by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A viewing will take place from 12:30 to 2:30 pm, followed by the funeral at 2:30 pm on Friday 2/21/2025, at Bachman Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 7 S. Decatur St, Strasburg, PA 17579. Interment in Mt. Eden Lutheran Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, kindly consider a donation in Jim’s memory to Helping Hands for Animals PO Box 162 Lampeter, PA 17537.

Beth and Family, I just heard if Jim’s passing and am so very sorry for your loss. Through our years of correspondence I know how especially skilled and hard working he was with his craft. Your town lost a great talent when he retired but you lost infinitely more in his passing. Words can’t express feelings now. I’ll just say, be well my old friend and Lincoln Heights neighbor.

Jim, a man of his words,a hard worker,a great stone mason, and a great friend during the Strasburg Jaycee Days,I was 14 years older then Jim and he got involved in Jaycees just before the volunteer atmosphere disappeared. jim did not. Jim laid all the stone work on the water fountains and the sign for free. The park paid for the material and no labor. Jim was very active in the Strasburg Jaycee Club and we had some good times working on volunteering projects, Jaycee Festivals and just plain good times. Condolence to the family and love to all . My sincerest sympathies go out to Erica and family for the loss of your dad and the patriarch of your family. I didn’t spend a lot of time with Jim, but I know that the love and pride he felt for his family were endless. Over the many special years I have known Erica, I’ve learned a lot about him, and two things that stand out are his pride in his craftsmanship as a talented stone mason and his passion for being on the road riding his bike! I know Erica inherited her work-hard/play-hard mindset from her dad. I wish you all healing and loving memories of such a cool and adventurous man!
All my love,
Maria Paone

Jim was, as you’ve written and as I’ve known him, “an active and adventurous spirit.” His employment years ago of a refugee sponsored by Mt. Eden Lutheran church was an undertaking in which we discovered that helping others isn’t always as easy as it may seem, is full of surprises big and little, and is not always fully rewarding. I think Jim knew all that from the start. Yet Jim thankfully accepted and completed the task with a smile, patience and good humour. Since that time, Elina and I are thankful to have known Jim and Beth as friends. We send, unfortunately from a distance, our condolences and love to Beth and the family. We trust Jim to our loving God and trust if heaven’s in need of any fixing up that Jim will have at it! Pastor Ed Bastian

Jim was on of the most hardworking, and kind people I have ever had the pleasure of working with. He was adored by everyone he worked with (coworkers and clients) and was not only our go-to guy that everyone knew they could count on, but a friend to all. Our hearts ache with you for his loss. We can all count ourselves as blessed having known him.

Condolences to Jim’s family. I’ve only known Jim for a little over a year thru our jobs as drivers at Chapman Ford. He became an immediate friend. To say we had a good time at work is an understatement, Jim made it fun. God speed, my friend.
