James C. Filling, 84

October 21, 2022

James C. Filling, 84, passed away peacefully on October 21, 2022 after several years of health struggles.

Jim Filling was born in Millersville, PA. As Jim liked to say, he was “born on the dining room table.” Jim assisted the family with running both Filling’s dry cleaning business and Filling’s clothing store. Jim graduated from Shippensburg University where his sales and marketing background originated as he had a sub sandwich operation he ran out of his dorm room. Jim had a long career at Armstrong World Industries, and then went on to work for many other companies including Strada Design, the Jay Group, East Coast Warehouse and Fulfillment, and Stoner Corporation. In “retirement” he drove cars at the Manheim Auto Auction.

Jim is survived by the love of his life—Linda Emich Filling aka BUP! Both born and raised in Lancaster, they met at Armstrong and have been married 55 years. The youngest of 9 brothers and sisters, Jim is also survived by his sister Kay Straley, who had a special relationship with her “baby brother.” He is also survived by sister-in-law Kitty Filling and many nieces and nephews. Jim and Linda have two children – J. Carey Filling, Jr., MBA and Michelle Filling-Brown, PhD. Jim always made sure their spouses, Diana Filling and Pat Brown, knew they were loved like his own children. Jim served in the Army, but was always more excited to tell people about how his son designs US Navy ships. Nothing made him happier than his four grandchildren – Audrey, Corinne, Jameson, and J – and 3 granddogs – Jack, Olive, and Angel.

Jim’s passion was boating. From days on the Susquehanna to weekends on the Chesapeake, Jim loved taking his family boating. His family is grateful for many years on the water with “Pop.”

Family and friends will be received from 2PM to 4PM on Tuesday, October 25, 2022 at the Charles F. Snyder, Jr. Funeral Home and Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543. Condolences to the Family

I did not know Jim, but I know his son, Carey, very well. Therefore, I know that Jim was an exceptional Father to raise such a fine man as Carey. I know from life that an exceptional Father is also very likely to be a loving Husband. That’s a legacy any man would desire to leave! May the Peace of the Lord be with Jim’s Family and his many friends.

Carey,
My deep sympathies to you and your family on the passing of your father. I always thought he was such a nice man.
Tell your mom she looks great. I looked at all the pictures.       Pat Brislin

I am saddened to hear the Jim died. Although I knew him for a number of years, we didn’t talk that much, but what he did say to me were life-lessons, I’ve taken them with me through life’s journey. … I specifically remember sitting with Jim and his son Carey at an after-school event in the school cafeteria, and Jim asked me point blank, “So what is your plan, Paul?” At 16, I didn’t have any quick respones to adults. I sat thinking how to respond. So Jim said something like, “Your career, what are you’re going study?… What do you want to do? You think about that, now. Have a plan.” I had some dreams, but no plan, and I was too much of a self-conscious, insecure teenager to share.  However, … from then on I always thought about the big picture, though, the long-term goals, the true goals and how to get there, and the time it might take. I cannot explain what a life-lesson Jim gave me. Life-changing. … He also relayed some tips on how to behave in a corporate setting, and he had a way of saying it with a grin, revealing his comic wit… and if anyone knew how to navigate the corporate front-office, it was Jim. … again, more life-lessons. Thank you, Jim Filling. Fair winds and following seas.

Jim was really one of the nicest people to work with at Armstrong!  He was very helpful and supportive of my career.  Always a pleasure to be with – natural grace and humor.  Of course he is part of the Filling family – all the better for it.  My deepest sympathy to the family.

Was a classmate of Jim’s at Manor High.  Good guy.  Blessings to family.

Jim was my most respected Uncle from the early days of our love for cars and speed. He was my mentor during our days in the flooring industries. He was a big reason I moved to Lancaster. Loved him more like a brother!
