J. Clair “Wit” Witwer, 67
October 12, 2021
Jay Clair Witwer, 67, of Millersville, passed away at home, Tuesday, October 12, 2021. Born in Lancaster County, Clair was the son of the late Roy V. and Emma (Hoover) Witwer. He was the loving husband of Jane M. (Johnson) Witwer, with whom he celebrated 35 years of marriage.
Clair was a 1971 graduate of Lampeter-Strasburg High School and went on to Delaware Valley College to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture in 1975 and then earned his Master’s degree from the University of Delaware. He worked as an agricultural teacher at Pequea Valley High School where he taught for over 35 years, retiring in 2015. It was there that he was inducted into the 2002 Pequea Valley High School Hall of Fame after coaching wrestling for 19 years. In addition to teaching, Clair owned and operated Roy V. Witwer Co., a feed company started by his father. Clair took great pride in providing quality feed to many farmers throughout Lancaster and York counties.
One of Clair’s greatest passions was barbeque. He enjoyed smoking meats, cheeses, and anything else that could be put on a grill or smoker. Clair even became a judge for the Kansas City Barbecue Society and the Steak Cookoff Association. He also enjoyed collecting John Deere memorabilia and loved going to farm shows.
In addition to his wife, Jane, he is survived by his daughter, Laura Witwer, wife of Joseph Schlitz, of Hanover; siblings: Janet Witwer, Texas; Judy Nguyen, New Holland; Joyce Baum, wife of Gary, Lancaster; Jane Pekala, wife of Joe, Lancaster; Jeffrey Witwer, Lancaster; his uncle, Lester Witwer, Texas; his aunt, Valeria Brunoff, New Holland; mother-in-law, Julia Johnson, of Strasburg; brother-in-law: Don Johnson, husband of Pam, Strasburg; sister-in-law, Pam Wybraniec, wife of Ron, Lancaster; a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and his beloved canine companion, Luna.

If it wasn’t for clair I wouldn’t have graduated I really enjoyed having him as a teacher.

Clair was my ffa leader and my teacher for 4 years. He was also my mentor for my senior project if not for hin I would not have graduated. He also taught my brother a few classes. He was a great teacher. One day he caught a bunch of us with dip in our mouth while building a shed for a class. He said I noticed some are suffering from fat lip syndrome. I don’t wann see it again. He could have gotten 7 of us suspended but he decided to give us a break and because we actually respected him we decided to listen and we stopped. Greatful he didn’t take it to the principal.

Joann and I will very much miss Wit, an ever-present fellow judge at so many bbq contests. He was always in good spirits and would do whatever was needed to help make each competition successful. Flights of angels to escort you to your heavenly home, dear friend, where the bbq will always be triple 9s.

My sincere condolences to Jane, Laura and Joseph at this time of great loss. I know Clair has left a big hole in each of your hearts with his sudden departure. He has had great influence on so many lives. His dry sense of humor, quick wit and pranks leave a long line of memories. My big brother Clair was given the nick name Wit in high school and has worn that name well. Thinking of back then, I remember the day Clair took a teacher’s shoes from under the teacher’s desk and put one on the outside door knob of that door and the other on the next room. I had class in that room following his class. I noticed the teacher standing behind the desk in front of the room and not by the chalkboard. Part way through class, there was a knock on the door and another teacher opened the door holding a shoe. He asked “are you missing this?” They both went down the hall to search for the other shoe. When he returned, he looked right at me and said “tell your big brother, just wait until I see him again.” Come to think of it, I never did hear what happened next. Then there was a time our whole family was invited to Sunday dinner and Clair decided to stay home. Mom was sure he would make a sandwich or heat some leftovers. I remember her surprise when she found the meat wrapper in the trash and she checked the fridge for leftovers. Clair had gone to the meat freezer from butchering a beef, pulled out a family size Tbone steak, cooked and ate the whole thing. How’s that for a first cooking attempt. Then he went on to be a wonderful BBQ and grill master. Can’t help but wonder if he’s grilling in heaven.
I am keeping you all in my prayers. The days ahead will be difficult, but with God’s love and strength and the help of family and friends, you will get through this. Rest in Peace big brother, rest in peace. Love you, Janet Witwer

Clair was a great mentor who instilled his love for small gas engines and agriculture to many. As a younger teacher interested in ag mechanics, he was always willing to offer his patience and guidance to me and for that I am grateful. He always enjoyed the Ag Teacher and FFA conferences and the chance to laugh, learn and teach. He will be missed, but his legacy lives on in all that had the fortunate opportunity to work with, learn from and know him.

Mr. Witwer was a great teacher. I never had any of his classes but he was well known to all students because he would stand out in the hallway and greet us in the mornings and at the end of the day.
