Irene J. Hazatones, 92

Irene J. Hazatones, 92, died peacefully at home on Monday, October 1, 2007.

Irene was the wife of the late James Hazatones who died in 1952. She was the mother of Patrick J. Hazatones, husband of Helen P. of Lancaster, PA, with whom she resided.

Born in Asfendiou Kos Greece, she was the daughter of the late Apostolos and Argyro (Papasevastos)  Kosaris.

Irene previously worked at the former Queen Restaurant and also at Whitehall Convalescent Center. She was a devout, lifelong member of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. She was an active church volunteer, and worked every year at the Annual Greek Food Bazaar. She was a charitable woman, and in 1991 she was honored as Philoptocos Woman of the Year. For many years, she would walk in the annual Lancaster Crop Walk for Hunger, until she was unable. She enjoyed cooking and was known for making yiaprakia (stuffed grape leaves), and she created and recited poetry for all occasions.  She loved spending time with her family and keeping in touch with her family in Greece.

Surviving besides her son are three granddaughters: Despina M., wife of Michael A. Houck of Elizabethtown; Irini, wife of Ray Zeliznik of Mountville; and Demetra S., wife of Sgt. Carl Hildebrandt of West Topsham, VT; two great-grandchildren, Eleni and Nicholas Houck; one brother, Yiannie Kosaris of Kos, Greece. She was preceded in death by four brothers: Stamati, Sevastos, Nicholas, and Kosta; and three sisters: Stamatia, Angeliki and Melpomeni.

Relatives and friends may attend the viewing on Wednesday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 64 Hershey Ave., Lancaster, PA 17603. The Trisagion service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Annunciation Church on Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Alexander Veronis officiating. Interment will be in Conestoga Memorial Park. Please omit flowers; memorial contributions in Irene’s memory may be sent to Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. Charles F.
