Condolences to the Family

December 23, 2018

I found sad news by way of Google and the Internet. I knew Ira Grushow from the time that we were graduate students in English at Yale. Every now and then I do a search for old fellow students, and more and more I discover that a once-beloved colleague has passed. My memory of him is still sharp. He had a sharp wit and a way of quoting apposite words from Shakespeare or Pope to comment on the present situation, like the time I was preparing dinner for us, getting more and more flustered until he quoted Hamlet, “Cease, perturbed spirit.” He was kind as well as witty, as I am sure he was with his family. I am glad that he had a good career and a rich family life. My condolences to his family and friends.

Professor Grushow was a highlight of my time at Franklin and Marshall.  He was gentle, patient, and unfailingly kind while still being the challenging academic who pushed me to be a better scholar. My love of literature and career as an English teacher were heavily influenced by Professor Grushow.  When I was older and returned to F&M, he made me feel like an old friend every time I saw him.  He was a good soul, and I’m glad our paths overlapped for a time.

I am so sorry for your loss. Ira was one of my volunteers at the blind association radio station in Lancaster. I believe he read on Thursday afternoons, but also substituted on other days. Over the many discussions we had, I remember discovering all the places he and Jane and travelled and were planning to travel. I also remember him teaching me the best way to roll newsprint for a fireplace. Such a kind person. My sincere condolences.

Dear Jane and family,
I was very sorry to learn of Ira’s passing.  He was a kind and generous friend whose ready wit—and in particular his love of puns—brightened many days.  The world seems a much poorer place without him.  My deepest sympathy to you all.

Dear Jane and family,
I am so sorry for your loss. I have many fond memories of visits to your farm and having tea, visiting the gardens, and trying to find Ira amidst all of the books. I remember the time when Dr Gentzler performed a cardiac cathh on Ira and he was so proud to be able to care for him as he was fortunate to have Ira as one of his favorite and best professors at F&M. I wish you and your family peace and blessings.

We’re so sorry to hear of Ira’s passing.  While we never met him, we knew he was a good man through your stories of him and your long life together.  We miss you on the scuba trips but knew your heart was with Ira.
