Ira David Rappaport, 68

April 10, 2017

Dr. Ira David Rappaport died peacefully at his home in Lancaster, PA on April 10, 2017 at the age of 68.

Ira is survived by his loving wife and high school sweetheart, Michelle; his children, Craig (married to Lori) Rappaport of Simsbury, CT and Meredith (Rappaport) Berrier of Lancaster; his sister, Pam (married to Larry) Maxon of New Hampton, NY; and three grandchildren, Avery and Austin Rappaport and Caroline Berrier.

Ira was born in Brooklyn, NY to Milton and Estelle (Gorman) Rappaport. Ira grew up in Bethpage, Long Island where he was a member of the Bethpage High School golf team. Ira was always proud to share that his home golf course was Bethpage Black, which has hosted the U.S. Open. He graduated from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1970 and the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 1974.

As owner of Lanchester Dental Associates in Christiana, PA, Ira served as dentist to generations of families and many patients who enjoyed his incredible sense of humor and gentle manner.

Ira’s greatest joy was his family, especially his grandchildren. His face would light up with a huge smile whenever he was around any of his three grandchildren. Ira loved telling jokes and making people laugh. That sense of humor never left him. He continued to make his family laugh with his jokes even in the final days of his life. While he will be greatly missed by all who knew him, his family is comforted by the time that was spent with him in the final week of his life.

The family would like to thank all the caregivers, especially those at Hospice and Central Penn Nursing, for their care and dedication to Ira.

No funeral is scheduled at this time. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Hospice and Community Care www.hospiceandcommunitycare.org.

It is hard to put in writing what Ira meant to me growing together in Bethpage. We were best friends till I moved in 11th grade – Ira lived across the street at 65 Keswick Lane and myself at 64 Keswick. We did cub scouts, boy scouts, shared a tent at Camp Wauwepax, little league, endured hebrew school, the Bar Mitzvah circuit, trading baseball cards, , snowball fights, shooting pool and golf. Many a baseball game at the park next to our houses. We did Kramer Lane with our safety patrol on up to high school being in the same classes.  Because there were two us, the gang of friends always hung at our homes.  Scott, Cliff, Mike,Jackie, Peter, Carl, Paul, Bob were all part of our wondeful childhood. Ira always kept his New York humor, his fierce dedication to his family. We were born in the same hospital in Brooklyn and our birthdays were 3 days apart. I would  call him on his birthday. Ira always kept his New york humor and his fierce dedication to his family. When I would call he always shared how proud he was of his children, grandchildren and Michelle. I will miss him dearly

Ira was one of my best friends growing up together in Bethpage since the first grade. His home was a gathering place for a lot of friends when we were young. I was glad I had the opportunity to talk to him a few weeks before he passed. He grew up to be an accomplished person and a family man. My condolences to Michelle and his children.
