Helen T. (Smieya) Pulaski, 97, passed away on Wednesday, February 5, 2020 in Willow Street, PA. Born in Travis, Staten Island, she was the daughter of the late Rozalia (Janiak) and Vincenty Smieja. She was the loving wife to the late Edward T. Pulaski with whom she shared 34 years of marriage.
A loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Helen held a special place in each one of her grandchildren’s hearts. They were as devoted to her as she was to them and they remained her proudest accomplishment, sharing their lives at all times. Her loving nature for all and her effervescent smile remains in their hearts and in the hearts of many she helped along the way.
A graduate of Curtis High School and Burrows Business School, she was employed by the American News Company until her marriage and with her husband was co-owner of the Pulaski Funeral Home in New Brighten, Staten Island for 25 years.
She was employed at the former Marine Midland/HSBC bank in the coding department in Manhatten.
A Master needle-pointer whose award winning work was displayed in many competitions. In addition, she was involved in many activities and social organizations such as the local chapter of the Polish National Alliance, where she served as secretary of Lodge 102. She was also a member of the Ladies Circle of Staten Island, the Polish American Singing Society, the Polish American Mother’s Club, and promoted the Pulaski Day Parades with her husband “Ted” as Grand Marshall. An active member of St Stanislaus Kostka Church, she was involved with the Rosarians and their devotion to the Rosary, Helen was honored at an anniversary dinner as one of the oldest members of the parish.
She is survived by her daughter Helene Pulaski Hartmann and her husband, Manfred of East Drumore Twp, PA and her son Edward T. Pulaski and his wife Brenda of Staten Island, NY; three granddaughters: Alexandra Tufano and her husband, Daniel of Lancaster, Adrienne Smith and her husband Douglas of Lancaster, Margaret Fisher and her husband, Thaddaeus of Chester Springs and five great grandchildren: Olivia Tufano, Nicholas Tufano, Claudia Smith, Benjamin Smith and Thaddaeus Paul Fisher. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her three siblings: Thaddeus Smieya, Estelle Harzewski and Cecelia Charzewski. She is also survived by three nephews and a niece.
Funeral is from the Matthew Funeral Home, Inc., 2508 Victory Boulevard, on Wednesday, departing at 10:15 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Stanislaus Kostka R.C. Church at 11 a.m., with interment to follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Family and friends will be received at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
