H. Clyde Saylor, 93

July 13, 2019

H. Clyde Saylor, 93, of Lancaster, PA, was called home to be with his Lord on Saturday, July 13, 2019.

He was the husband of the late Anna May Cessna Saylor, who was called in 1995 and the late Mary Rose Frankford Saylor, called in 2017. Born in Altoona, he was the son of the late Herbert S. and Juletta M. Kimmen Saylor.

Clyde retired from Exide Corporation (formerly General Battery Corp) where he worked as the plant superintendent from 1963 to 1990.

Clyde was a US Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving as a Staff Sgt and a waist gunner on a B-24 Liberator with the 10th Air Force, 7th Bomb Group, 436th Squadron in the Pacific and China-Burma-India Theaters. Contrary to what is depicted in the famous movie, The Bridge Over The River Kwai, Clyde’s Liberator dropped the bombs which finally brought the bridge down.

Clyde was a very involved member of the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard in Lancaster County and loved hunting and fishing. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and follower of Christ.

He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Lancaster.

Clyde is survived by his sons: Jeffrey married to Loretta Saylor of Mifflintown, Terry married to Connie Saylor of Lititz, and Sam Saylor of Lancaster; stepsons George Frankford of Strasburg & Chad Frankford of Leola; his grandchildren; his great grandchildren; and his siblings Edna Martinella of Greensburgh, and Mary Clare and Dick Saylor both of Altoona. Clyde was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Blessing, his daughter in law Cathy Saylor, his granddaughter Amy, his great granddaughter Ava, and his siblings: Helen McMichael, Marian Huber, and Bryce Saylor.

Friends will be received on Saturday, July 20, 2019 at Calvary Baptist Church, 530 Milton Rd., Lancaster, PA from 10AM-12Noon, with the Funeral Service to follow at 12Noon. Interment to follow in Conestoga Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in his memory to Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard, Box 8601, Lancaster, PA 17604-8601 and/or Hospice & Community Care, 685 Good Drive, Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125. I met Clyde in our piano class just this year. He was so kind, gracious, and welcoming, and lovely to speak with. I will remember him as a model to live by, embracing life fully. Prayers for peace to Clyde’s family.

Clyde was a blessing to so many in our church family, always seeking ways to be active and involved in various projects around the church. He was also passionate about inviting people to our services so they could hear the good news about the saving power of Jesus Christ. I regret that I will still be in Zambia at the time of his memorial service. He will be missed by many.

We were blessed with the kindest next-door neighbors in Clyde and Rose for many years. Clyde‘s generosity knew no bounds. He was simply a wonderful person and our children saw him as another loving grandfather. So many will miss his friendly hugs but we are all certainly better people for the time we shared with him!

Clyde loves Jesus and often spoke of his (now realized) desire to go be with Him. He enjoyed singing hymns at church and sharing his humor and that wry smile of his. We went shore fishing together at some area ponds and he generously gave me a fishing lure and told me how to use it, telling me how many fish he had caught using it. I’ll remember him every time I see it. Clyde could be stubborn in his views but (at least with me) was willing with a smile to hear a contrary perspective, as well. He could tell a good story I hope to be active well on into advanced age like him. I’ll miss him. Michael Westlund, Calvary Baptist Church.

I want to express my deepest sympathy to the Saylor family with the passing of Clyde. It has been my pleasure to know Clyde from working with him at General Battery/Exide to occasionally being in Pulaski, New York for the Steelhead/Salmon run when he was there. Clyde had many was to make a lasting impression on you from his wisdom to his lifelong experiences. Reflecting on a fishing trip to Pulaski, Clyde had made his spaghetti sauce that he was so proud of. My oldest son at that time didn’t eat spaghetti and he was in his late teens to mid-20’s. With a long day along the stream fishing created quite an appetite for the young man and when he found out we were having spaghetti he was disappointed to say the least. However, the hunger was overpowering so he ate a plate, the taste was so good he had seconds. Today after reading Clyde’s obituary we reflected that dinner and spaghetti still taste good to this day.

I am so sorry that I cannot be there on Saturday as I will be out of town.

Clyde was a beautiful soul who enjoyed life, family and friends. Clyde came to our home in Potter Co. with his step-son, George, and hunted with us. We always enjoyed his wittiness, his stories and his friendship. We also enjoyed seeing him at family gatherings. Rest in peace dear friend as you receive your eternal heavenly reward.
